The Recreation Coordinator of Playgrounds &; Community Centers oversees a diverse array of recreation programs throughout the city of Milwaukee, including youth and adult recreation enrichment programs, summer playgrounds, mobile recreation units, community wellness programming, twilight centers for teens, late-night and twilight sports leagues, and special events. Key responsibilities include the management of 17 full-time staff, and more than 450 part-time staff, as well as program administration and evaluation, budget development and oversight, and facility management.
The ideal candidate is a seasoned leader with the ability to manage a diverse staff and a wide variety of recreation programs, along with the passion to work to ensure the recreation needs of all individuals in Milwaukee are met.

Oversee the success of 17 full-time staff members through guidance, training, and evaluation.

Participate in the development of the work plan for assigned areas, including short and long-range planning.

Assigns work activities, projects, and programs; monitors workflow; reviews and evaluates work products, methods, and procedures.

Develop and monitor a budget of more than $3 million.

Assess community needs, investigate program trends, analyze program evaluations, and recommend program adjustments.

Establish partnerships with other MPS departments, governmental units, and community-based organizations to enhance community center and twilight program development and service delivery.

Implement business practices and policies, including contract development, fees and charges oversight, inventory control, and supply purchases.

Maintain program effectiveness through annual performance-based evaluation and reports for assigned areas of responsibility.

Assist with a thorough review of and edits to marketing materials and programs listed in seasonal activity guides.

Provide leadership and support for special projects and initiatives sponsored by Milwaukee Public Schools and Milwaukee Recreation.

Assist in the administration, data collection, and preparation of internal and external reports for departmental grants.

Conduct regular site visits (evenings and weekends) to determine program effectiveness and to provide evaluation feedback and support to full-time staff.

Manage program area customer surveys, assist in the interpretation of data, and supervise changes in programming based on customer feedback.

Understand departmental software that provides efficiencies to daily work.

Represent the department on school and community councils, committees, and advisory groups.

Actively support the MPS Five Priorities for Success.

Other duties as assigned to meet the needs of Milwaukee Public Schools and Milwaukee Recreation.
Education Requirement

Bachelor's degree required (master's degree preferred) from an accredited college or university in recreation management, athletic administration, sports management, education, or related field. Certified Park and Recreation Professional or ability to obtain within 1 year of hire date.

Experience Requirement:

With Bachelor's: A minimum of seven (7) years of increasingly responsible full-time recreation experience, including at least five (5) years of management and administrative responsibility in an urban setting.

With Master's: A minimum of five (5) years of increasingly responsible full-time recreation experience, including at least three (3) years of management and administrative responsibility in an urban setting.
