Purpose of the Role
The Manager on Duty (MOD) is responsible for overseeing the overall hospital operations during assigned shifts, ensuring smooth functioning of clinical and non-clinical services, addressing patient and staff concerns, and acting as the hospital’s administrative authority in the absence of senior management.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Management
- Oversee day-to-day hospital operations during assigned shifts.
- Ensure smooth coordination between clinical, nursing, support services, and administration.
- Monitor patient flow including admissions, discharges, and transfers.
- Ensure availability of required manpower, equipment, and support services.
Patient Care & Experience
- Address patient and attendant grievances promptly and courteously.
- Ensure high standards of patient care and service delivery.
- Handle medico-administrative issues and escalations effectively.
- Ensure adherence to patient safety and quality protocols.
Staff Coordination & Supervision
- Act as the point of contact for all staff during the shift.
- Resolve staff-related issues such as absenteeism, duty allocation, and emergencies.
- Ensure proper handover between shifts.
- Support nursing supervisors and department heads as required.
Emergency & Incident Management
- Handle hospital emergencies, code situations, and critical incidents.
- Coordinate with doctors, nursing staff, security, and external agencies when required.
- Ensure proper documentation and reporting of incidents.
Compliance & Documentation
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies, SOPs, and statutory guidelines.
- Maintain shift reports, incident reports, and escalation logs.
- Ensure proper documentation of patient complaints and resolutions.
Liaison & Communication
- Act as a liaison between patients, doctors, management, and support teams.
- Communicate critical updates to senior management as needed.
- Represent hospital management during the assigned shift.

Educational Qualification
- Graduate / Postgraduate in Hospital Administration, Healthcare Management, or related field
- Clinical background with administrative experience may be preferred
Experience
- Minimum 3–7 years of experience in hospital administration or healthcare operations
- Prior experience in supervisory or MOD role is desirable
