Managing Attorney

Boone, United States

We are excited to announce a job opportunity for the position of Managing Attorney at Legal Aid of North Carolina.

Position Title: Managing Attorney

Reports to: Regional Managing Attorney - Western

Employment Type: Full-Time, Exempt

Location: High Country Office (Boone)

Application Deadline: Open until filled

About us: Legal Aid of North Carolina is a statewide, nonprofit law firm that provides free legal services in civil matters to low-income people to ensure equal access to justice and to remove legal barriers to economic opportunity. Legal Aid is an innovative, creative, progressive, and efficient civil legal service provider to the poor, working towards an inclusive justice system of equal access. All voices are valued, heard, and respected.

Who we are looking for: Legal Aid of North Carolina is seeking a Managing Attorney to lead the Boone Office during a critical period of increased legal demand. The ideal candidate will possess strong litigation skills and proven leadership experience, with a deep commitment to serving low-income and vulnerable populations. This role requires effective management of attorneys and support staff, oversight of case strategy and quality, and ensuring compliance with funding and reporting requirements. Additionally, the Managing Attorney will mentor and develop staff, foster a positive work environment, and serve as a key liaison between the Boone office, regional leadership, and community partners.

Why this role matters: The Boone Office is experiencing an unprecedented surge in legal needs following Hurricane Helene, which has left thousands of residents in Western North Carolina struggling with housing instability, benefits denials, domestic violence, and other urgent legal challenges. Our attorneys are operating at or near capacity, and this role is essential for providing dedicated on-site leadership to manage the increased caseload and complex litigation demands.

Without a Managing Attorney, critical functions such as staff supervision, disaster response coordination, and compliance oversight risk being compromised. Furthermore, the absence of leadership limits our ability to expand services into rural counties hit hardest by the hurricane areas where access to justice is already scarce. By filling this role, we ensure that our team can continue delivering high-quality legal representation, meet growing community needs, and maintain strong partnerships with local courts, nonprofits, and other stakeholders vital to long-term recovery efforts.

What you will do:

  • Supervision & Mentorship: Provide direct supervision, mentoring, and performance management for staff attorneys, paralegals, and interns to ensure high-quality legal representation and professional growth.
  • Disaster Response Leadership: Oversee Hurricane Helene-related casework, including FEMA appeals, DUA claims, housing stability, and consumer protection matters; coordinate strategy to maximize impact and consistency across cases.
  • Case Management & Quality Control: Monitor caseload distribution, review case handling, and ensure compliance with LANC policies, grant requirements, and professional responsibility standards.
  • Community Partnerships & Outreach: Serve as the primary liaison with local courts, shelters, nonprofits, and community partners in Boone and surrounding rural counties, building collaborations that expand access to justice in disaster recovery and beyond.
  • Strategic Planning & Expansion: Lead efforts to expand services into neighboring rural counties hardest hit by Helene, aligning staff capacity with community needs.
  • Administrative Oversight: Manage office operations, including scheduling, reporting, grant compliance, and data tracking to support transparency and accountability to funders.
  • Direct Legal Representation (as needed): Manage a reduced but strategic caseload, particularly in high-impact Helene-related matters, to model effective advocacy and support training of staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What you will bring to Legal Aid of North Carolina:

  • Juris Doctorate (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Expertise in poverty-related law (FEMA, DUA, housing, benefits)
  • A passion for serving low-income clients.
  • A strong commitment to the professional growth of Legal Aid employees.
  • An accountable leader who takes responsibility for their team’s performance.
  • Strong leadership and staff supervision
  • Case management and quality control
  • Community partnership building
  • Strategic planning and problem-solving
  • Excellent communication and advocacy skills
  • An empathetic decision maker.
  • Exceptional legal skills and experience.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Experience in supervision

What we offer:

  • Competitive salary and health benefits package
  • 401(k) retirement plan with a discretionary contribution
  • Flexible work environment
  • Paid time off and holidays
  • Paid parental leave (up to 12 weeks)
