Managing Editor — Sand Mountain Reporter
The Managing Editor oversees the day-to-day editorial operations and content strategy for the Sand Mountain Reporter. This role is responsible for coordinating newsroom workflow, assigning and editing stories, maintaining publication standards, managing deadlines, and ensuring accurate, engaging coverage that serves the local community. The Managing Editor works closely with writers, contributors, photographers, and leadership to guide content direction across print and digital platforms while helping grow the publication’s reach and community impact.
Daily Responsibilities
- Oversee daily newsroom operations and editorial workflow
- Assign stories, projects, and coverage areas to reporters and contributors
- Edit articles for grammar, clarity, accuracy, tone, and AP style consistency
- Review headlines, layouts, captions, and final print/digital content before publication
- Coordinate publication deadlines and ensure timely delivery of content
- Develop story ideas and help lead community-focused coverage
- Communicate with reporters, photographers, freelancers, and community contacts
- Assist with breaking news coverage and special projects as needed
- Help manage social media, digital content planning, and audience engagement
- Attend meetings, events, interviews, or community functions when necessary
- Maintain strong editorial standards and ethical journalism practices
- Work alongside leadership on long-term publication growth and strategy
Qualifications
- Strong writing, editing, and communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Leadership, organizational, and team coordination abilities
- Familiarity with journalism, news writing, and editorial processes
- Experience in journalism, media, communications, publishing, or managerial leadership preferred
- Knowledge of AP Style preferred
- Comfortable working both independently and collaboratively
- Passion for local news and community storytelling
Requirements
- No degree required
- Prior experience in journalism, editing, newsroom operations, media, or management preferred
- Dependable, detail-oriented, and able to lead a team effectively
- Must be adaptable and capable of handling time-sensitive situations and deadlines
Pay: $35,000.00 - $45,000.00 per year
