Position Summary

Knower is seeking an experienced Manual Machinist to join growing teams of Proud Knower Members. In this role, you will support the repair, rebuilding, and modification of industrial AC/DC electric motors, generators, pumps, and related rotating equipment. You will operate a variety of manual machine tools and precision measuring equipment to restore components to OEM specifications while maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and craftsmanship.

What You’ll Do

  • Operate manual machining equipment including engine lathes, horizontal lathes, milling machines, drill presses, grinders, band saws, and related tools
  • Perform turning, boring, threading, drilling, tapping, milling, and broaching operations (non-CNC equipment)
  • Restore components to OEM specifications including shaft repair, sleeving IDs, skim cutting ODs, keyway milling, and re-centering work
  • Machine new shafts and components from samples using materials such as steel, bronze, aluminum, and other industrial alloys
  • Perform tool-post grinding, commutator undercutting, and bearing-related machining work
  • Perform welding, brazing, and soldering (MIG, TIG, stick, and torch applications)
  • Complete basic metallizing (metal spraying) as required
  • Balance rotating assemblies using dynamic balancing equipment
  • Use precision measuring tools (micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, vibration instruments) to maintain tight tolerances (including .0001” work where required)
  • Measure TIR and accurately indicate parts in chucks and fixtures
  • Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and technical specifications
  • Record measurements, production data, job time, and required documentation accurately
  • Operate overhead cranes, gantry cranes, forklifts, and rigging equipment safely
  • Maintain clean, organized work areas and follow all safety policies and PPE requirements
  • Assist other machinists and departments as needed
  • Support continuous improvement in processes, quality, and workflow

What You Bring

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred; Associate degree in Machine Tool Technology a plus
  • 3–7+ years of manual machining experience (industrial repair or motor shop environment preferred)
  • Strong experience operating engine lathes (including 4-jaw chuck work), knee mills, and precision grinding equipment
  • Solid understanding of machining principles, metal properties, and repair applications
  • Intermediate welding, brazing, and soldering skills
  • Ability to work to tight tolerances and perform precision measurement work
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving ability
  • Ability to read blueprints and follow technical instructions
  • Dependable, detail-oriented, and self-motivated
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Willingness to work overtime and weekends as needed
  • Ability to follow safety procedures and use proper protective equipment at all times

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, bend, stoop, kneel, and move throughout the shift
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs regularly
  • Occasional lifting over 100 lbs with proper equipment or assistance
  • Strong visual acuity for precision measurement and inspection work
  • Ability to safely handle heavy components using cranes, forklifts, and rigging

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Operate non-CNC machine tools to fabricate, modify, and repair mechanical components
  • Perform drilling, tapping, boring, milling, lathe work, and related machining operations
  • Ensure all completed work meets company quality system requirements
  • Use precision measuring tools to verify tolerances and specifications
  • Perform welding, brazing, soldering, and metallizing as needed
  • Maintain accurate records of measurements, production data, and job documentation
  • Follow all safety procedures and maintain a clean, organized workspace
  • Support team members and assist across departments as required
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisor or service center manager
