Manufacturing Engineer

South Bend, United States

This role is responsible for designing, implementing, and improving manufacturing processes to enhance productivity, quality, and efficiency. The ideal candidate will collaborate across departments to ensure seamless production and continuous improvement. The Manufacturing Engineer is the champion for new product launches and delivering tools, check fixtures, patterns, processes and prints that are capable to produce the specified part in advance of production job start dates.


Key Responsibilities


This position reports directly to the Engineering Manager and has no direct reports.


  • Develop, evaluate, and improve manufacturing methods and workflows
  • Design tools, fixtures, and equipment to support production needs
  • Collaborate with design and quality teams to ensure manufacturability of new products
  • Analyze production data to identify trends and implement corrective actions
  • Lead root cause analysis and problem-solving initiatives for process issues
  • Support lean manufacturing and Six Sigma initiatives
  • Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and quality standards
  • Train production staff in new processes and equipment.
  • Releases accurate part routings (process, bills of material, set-up instructions, rates, packaging) that meet customer specifications, are optimized and on time for customer demand.
  • Participates in budgeting activities to suggest new equipment/technology.
  • Become expert on equipment and software capabilities to inform estimating processes.
  • 2+ years of experience in a manufacturing or production engineering role.
  • Proficiency in CAD software and manufacturing simulation tools.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, materials, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and continuous improvement principles.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong communication and project management abilities.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in manufacturing engineering, Welding Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.

Experience

  • Minimum 2 years in machine operation, programming or other relevant experience
  • Strong knowledge of departmental specific processes is preferred (MIG, TIG, nesting, feed lines & controls, and vision systems).
  • Other competencies may be required depending upon engineering department, i.e.: weld engineers may be required to hold the AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) credential.
