About Sonder Research X:
Sonder Research X is a pre-clinical biotech company advancing a proprietary liquid biopsy platform for early detection of cancer. Our technology integrates novel hardware, microfluidics, and data-driven approaches to enable highly sensitive and scalable diagnostics. As we move toward clinical validation and commercialization, we are building the physical systems that will support our next stage of growth.
We are a collaborative and fast-moving organization that values professionalism, attention to detail, and a supportive workplace environment for both our team and the collaborators, investors, and partners who regularly visit our facility.
Position Overview
We are seeking a highly hands-on Manufacturing Engineer to lead prototyping and fabrication efforts for our diagnostic platform. This role will be instrumental in translating early-stage R&D concepts into functional, testable, and production-ready hardware.
You will work at the intersection of engineering and biology, building and iterating on physical systems, developing custom tooling, and supporting the transition from prototype to early-stage manufacturing. This is an on-site, build-focused role requiring consistent hands-on work with tools, materials, and prototypes.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working at the intersection of design and hands-on fabrication, someone who can move seamlessly from concept to build and iterate quickly in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
-
Rapid Prototyping & Iteration: Lead the physical realization of R&D concepts through 3D printing (SLA/FDM) and manual fabrication.
-
Custom Tooling & Jigs: Design, fabricate, and test custom jigs, fixtures, and labware using CAD and shop tools to support both R&D and manufacturing workflows.
-
Shop Operations: Hands-on fabrication using power tools and hand tools. Experience with light CNC operation and CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) is a major plus for creating high-precision components.
-
Design for Manufacturability (DFMA): Work closely with the Senior Engineering team to translate R&D protocols into production-ready solutions, ensuring designs are optimized for fabrication efficiency.
-
Microfluidic Assembly: Lead the hands-on assembly and bonding of proprietary microfluidic devices, maintaining meticulous attention to detail.
-
Quality & Documentation: Perform rigorous inspections of fabricated parts and maintain detailed documentation (SOPs and test methods) in compliance with ISO 13485 and FDA QMSR (21 CFR Part 820).
-
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with scientists, engineers, and operations teams to ensure prototypes meet experimental and production requirements.
Requirements
Qualifications:
Required
-
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field
-
3+ years of hands-on experience in prototyping, fabrication, or manufacturing engineering, preferably within a regulated industry (medical device or biotech).
-
Expert proficiency in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks, Onshape, Fusion 360, or similar)
-
Demonstrated hands-on mastery with 3D printing (SLA, FDM) and post-processing techniques
-
Skilled with hand tools and basic shop equipment (e.g., drill press, saws, etc.)
-
Proven ability to build, test, and iterate on physical prototypes independently
-
Strong problem-solving skills with a rapid iteration mindset
-
Ability to work on-site in a highly hands-on environment
-
Demonstrated hands-on, build-oriented mindset with the ability to design, prototype, and iterate rapidly.
Preferred
-
Master’s degree in Mechanical, Biomedical, or Manufacturing Engineering
-
Experience in a regulated industry (medical device, diagnostics, or biotech)
-
Familiarity with ISO 13485 and/or FDA QMSR (21 CFR Part 820)
-
Experience with CNC machining, CAM software, or laser cutting/engraving
-
Experience working with microfluidic systems or small-scale fluidic devices
