A Marine Painter is responsible for preparing, painting, and finishing surfaces on ships, boats, and marine equipment. Their work helps protect vessels from corrosion, improves appearance, and ensures compliance with safety and industry standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Surface Preparation:
- Clean, sandblast, power-wash, or hand-prepare surfaces to remove rust, old paint, and debris.
- Apply masking and protective coverings to areas not meant to be painted.
- Painting & Coating:
- Apply primers, sealers, antifouling coatings, and finish paints using brushes, rollers, and spray equipment.
- Mix and match paint products according to specifications and manufacturer requirements.
- Apply coatings to hulls, decks, tanks, interior compartments, and structural components.
- Quality Control:
- Inspect surfaces for defects, thin spots, runs, or blistering.
- Ensure proper thickness (mils) of coatings using gauges or inspection tools.
- Follow all environmental and safety regulations for marine painting.
- Tools & Equipment:
- Safely operate spray guns, sanders, grinders, pressure washers, and blasting equipment.
- Maintain tools and equipment in proper working condition.
- Safety Compliance:
- Wear required PPE (respirator, gloves, Tyvek suit, harness, etc.).
- Follow confined space protocols, fall protection, and hazardous materials procedures.
- Dispose of paints and chemicals according to OSHA and environmental guidelines.
Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in marine, industrial, or automotive painting (preferred).
- Knowledge of paint systems such as epoxy, urethane, and anti-corrosive coatings.
- Ability to work in shipyards, dry docks, tight spaces, and at heights.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions or technical specs.
- Physical stamina for bending, lifting, standing, and working outdoors.
Work Environment
- Shipyards, marinas, dry docks, warehouses, or onboard vessels.
- Exposure to paint fumes, noise, heights, and varying weather conditions.
- Typically full-time, with possible overtime during ship repair schedules.
Pay: $20.00 - $22.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40 per week
