Summary

Kohala Food Hub is a growing and dynamic nonprofit organization with opportunities for advancement. We are seeking a Marketing & Community Outreach Coordinator with deep roots in Hawaiʻi - someone whose sense of place, cultural fluency, and community relationships inform not just what we communicate, but how we communicate it.

To succeed in this role, you must be outgoing, tenacious, organized, creative, and self-directed, with a genuine knack for people and excellent client and customer care. Marketing and community outreach activities, carried out at our Hāwī warehouse, in the field at community events and at community partner and customer sites around the island, and remotely are the core duties of this position. Prior experience with locally grown and made food is a great advantage.

Important Information

Residency in the Hawaiian Islands for a minimum of 10 years is strongly preferred. A deep sense of place - cultural, agricultural, ecological, and relational - is essential to guiding our tone and ensuring alignment with the values and spirit of our island community.

Kohala Food Hub Overview

Kohala Food Hub is an aggregator, distributor, marketer, and online marketplace of locally grown and produced food based in North Kohala. It is a 501(c)(3) organization focused on growing a sustainable regional food system by providing essential services and resources for local food producers and increasing community access to fresh, healthy food.

The Marketing & Community Outreach Coordinator directly supports farmers and ranchers on Hawaiʻi Island by growing markets for their goods and contributing to their financial recovery and long-term viability. All functions of this role support Kohala Food Hub’s mission to increase local food infrastructure, coordination, and access for a resilient and abundant Hawai‘i Island.

Schedule & Compensation

  • $30/hour (contracted)
  • Part-time: 10-20 hours per week; Mondays-Fridays, with some special events on weekends
  • Staff discount rate on all Kohala Food Hub online market orders
  • Mileage reimbursement for use of personal vehicle in performance of job duties (excluding normal commute) at the prevailing IRS rate

Key Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Newsletter Strategy & Email Marketing:
  • Work collaboratively with the Executive Director to develop and guide the strategy, tone, and voice of Kohala Food Hub’s email newsletter program. Review and revise drafts prepared by KFH staff for two standing weekly sends - Monday mornings at 9am and Friday afternoons at 12pm - ensuring consistency, quality, and alignment with organizational goals.
  • Social Media Marketing & Engagement: Manage social media accounts, create engaging content, respond to comments on KFH’s feeds and respond to sister/aligned entity posts, and run online promotions a minimum of twice per week, aligned with the timing of biweekly email marketing campaigns.
  • Digital & Print Advertising: Collaborate with KFH executive leadership to develop marketing materials such as brochures, flyers, printed and online ads.
  • Product & Program Promotion: Work collaboratively with the Executive Director to develop and execute marketing strategies to promote locally sourced food products and Kohala Food Hub programs.
  • Special Marketing & Engagement Projects: Lead targeted initiatives to grow and support the KFH community, including but not limited to:
  • Refer-a-friend campaign
  • Free community dinner events
  • Kūpuna Access Coordination
  • Events & Community Engagement: Represent Kohala Food Hub at farmers’ markets, food festivals, and other local events to boost brand awareness. Develop training materials for event representation and train Associates on those materials.
  • Sales & Customer Acquisition: Identify and reach out to potential retail, wholesale, and institutional customers - including direct consumers, visitor industry clients, resorts, restaurants, and markets/stores.
  • Client Relationship Management: Build and maintain strong relationships with existing and new customers to ensure long-term satisfaction and repeat business.
  • Market Research: Analyze market trends and customer preferences to optimize sales and outreach strategies.
  • Performance Tracking: Monitor marketing and sales performance, report on key metrics, and adjust strategies accordingly.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of two year’s experience with sales, community outreach, and/or marketing initiatives
  • Minimum of five years’ experience working with internet, email, social media platforms, Microsoft Office, and/or Google Workspace or equivalent
  • Residency in the Hawaiian Islands for a minimum of 10 years strongly preferred
  • Prior experience with locally grown and made food is a strong advantage
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Free of criminal background that bears a rational relationship to the job duties

Working Conditions

  • Marketing and outreach duties may be performed in-person at Kohala Food Hub’s warehouse in Hāwī, remotely and at the locations of various client and customer businesses around the island
  • Reliable transportation and use of a personal cell phone are required to perform some job duties
