Marketing Communications Manager

Job Summary

The Preservation Society of Charleston is seeking a full-time Marketing and Communications Manager to join the Operations Department as an integral team member to educate the community and our membership about the organization’s advocacy work, current initiatives, and mission.

The person in this role will be responsible for content development and the execution of the marketing and communications strategy including external communications, media relations, social media, and retail operations. They will work cross-departmentally and collaborate with members of the Advocacy, Advancement, and Retail teams.

The ideal candidate will be a team-oriented creative thinker with an interest in issue advocacy who possesses knowledge of general best practices for nonprofit communications, project management, creative content, and graphic design.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

Digital Communications – 50%

  • Creates and manages organization-wide editorial calendar inclusive of advocacy issues, preservation initiatives, advancement priorities, and retail operations;
  • Has primary responsibility for performing regular maintenance on organization website and ecommerce platform;
  • Designs, coordinates content for, and sends monthly email newsletter;
  • Creates, manages, and publishes content to social media platforms;
  • Supports SEO and digital advertising optimization;
  • Regularly reports analytics of various platforms;
  • Works with department heads to write and coordinate original content related to our advocacy initiatives, membership, and retail;
  • Using PSC’s branding guidelines, develop and counsel staff to strengthen digital communication strategies;
  • Stays current in the nonprofit communications industry by attending educational opportunities, webinars, and workshops, reading publications, and cultivating professional networks.

Print and Media Communications – 40%

  • Project management and creation of print collateral including flyers, brochures, posters, post cards for member meetings, Fall Tours, Carolopolis Awards, Preservation Month, and Advancement Department needs;
  • Project management of Preservation Progress magazine published twice per year;
  • Supports media relations in coordination with the Director of Public Affairs;

Retail Support – 10%

  • Provides support for retail shop staff and ecommerce website;
  • Creation and implementation of retail marketing plan.

Required Qualifications and Experience

o Bachelor’s degree, Associate degree, or other certification in Communications, Marketing, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience in communications, politics, or marketing;

o Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, specifically InDesign or other graphic design tools;

o Strong organization skills, including time and project management;

o Flexible and able to prioritize and collaborate

o Proficiency in concise written communication, persuasive writing, writing for social media and long- and short-form narrative writing;

o Experience with WordPress CMS and Square ecommerce platforms, CRM experience a plus;

o Experience creating digital media in an advocacy capacity preferred;

o Public speaking and media experience a plus;

o Appreciation and passion for preserving Charleston’s unique sense of place and cultural heritage.

Work Environment

This position operates in a professional office setting. Work schedule is generally 9am to 5pm with occasional work on evenings and weekends for meetings or programming.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $65,000.00 - $75,000.00 per year
