SUMMARY: Do you have a passion for wildlife and the outdoors? We provide a positive, fun working environment with plenty of opportunities for growth in leadership and teaching skills. Our Camp Director position will oversee the daily operations of a nature day camp by providing effective child management, training and coordinating staff, and teaching in an outdoor setting. NH Audubon believes in an inquiry-based, student-led approach to our teaching methods which is aimed at promoting curiosity of the natural world.
The Camp Directors will support the mission of New Hampshire Audubon, to protect New Hampshire’s natural environment for wildlife and for people, by assisting with the operation and program coordination of our established environmental day camps. Primary duties include managing daily camp operations, supervising camper and staff safety and well-being, and leading all-camp activities and games.
TITLE: Camp Director
LOCATION: Massabesic Center (Auburn, NH)
COMPENSATION:
Minimum Age Required: 21
HOURS: 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday, 8 am – 4:30 pm, 30-minute unpaid lunch, seasonal full-time, non-exempt (hourly paid). Hours may vary depending on camp needs.
SCHEDULE: May 26th - August 28th, 2026 (up to 14 weeks total: three weeks of onboarding, two weeks of all-staff training, eight weeks of active camp sessions, and one week of wrap-up and debrief duties).
Expected days off: weekends, Juneteenth (June 19th, 2026), Independence Day (July 3rd, 2026)
Possibility to work February Break (February 23rd-27th, 2026) and/or April Break (April 27th-May 1st, 2026) Camps or Camp Open House events depending on hiring date and availability.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
LEADERSHIP: Reports to Camp Programs Manager. When Camp Programs Manager is offsite, reports to Center Director (Auburn) or Education Director (Concord) during emergencies.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Outdoor camp setting; Non-smoking environment.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: High school diploma required. Bachelor’s degree or current enrollment in elementary education, environmental education, outdoor education, biology, natural history, or related field preferred.
Experience: Must have experience working in a camp setting and supervising children in grades K-9; demonstrated ability to develop creative environmental education activities. Proven leadership and supervisory experience required. Ability to make both independent and collaborative decisions required. Must have American Red Cross or American Heart Association Standard First Aid certification, CPR certification or equivalent, Medication Management for Unlicensed Persons course, or willingness to obtain certifications. Wilderness First Aid and/or additional safety/risk management certifications preferred.
Skills, Traits and Characteristics Necessary for Success: Requires exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Creativity, flexibility, and enthusiasm are necessary. Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to pass a criminal background check. Must be fully vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19 and can provide COVID vaccination card at orientation. Camp uniform required (provided).
Physical Demands: To perform the essential functions of the position, the following applies: excellent physical condition with capability to moderately hike, run and climb, tolerance for variable weather conditions, ability to work in an outdoor setting, and able to lift up to 25 lbs.
