A Material Engineer researches, develops, and tests materials used to create a wide range of products. They analyze material properties, improve performance, and ensure materials meet quality, safety, and cost requirements for manufacturing and product development.
Key Responsibilities
- Material Research & Development
- Study the chemical, mechanical, and physical properties of metals, polymers, ceramics, composites, and other materials.
- Develop new materials or improve existing ones to enhance strength, durability, weight, cost, or environmental performance.
- Testing & Analysis
- Conduct laboratory tests such as tensile, fatigue, hardness, thermal, and corrosion testing.
- Interpret data to determine material suitability for specific applications.
- Identify causes of material failures and recommend corrective actions.
- Process Improvement
- Optimize manufacturing processes (heat treatments, forming, molding, welding, additive manufacturing, etc.).
- Work with production teams to ensure materials perform consistently in manufacturing environments.
- Design & Technical Support
- Collaborate with engineers in mechanical, aerospace, civil, and electrical disciplines to select appropriate materials.
- Provide technical documentation, specifications, and reports.
- Ensure materials meet industry standards and regulatory requirements.
- Quality & Compliance
- Implement quality control systems for material inspection.
- Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, and industry regulations
- Project Management
- Manage R&D projects, timelines, and budgets.
- Work with suppliers to assess and qualify new materials.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Metallurgy, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
- Strong knowledge of material properties, microstructures, and manufacturing processes.
- Experience with laboratory testing, material characterization equipment
- Proficient in engineering software (CAD tools, simulation tools like ANSYS or COMSOL).
- Analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Effective communication and report-writing abilities.
- Minimum 7 years of work experience in roads and infrastructures
