BROAD DESCRIPTION OF POSITION

The Materials Manager will implement, execute and manage the Material Planning and Procurement working under the corporate CPO direction utilizing approved contracts and act as an agent for the Company to procure materials, components, supplies, equipment and services at the most favorable cost and terms consistent with standards of quality and manufacturing objectives. Responsible for optimizing material lead times to support manufacturing and customer requirements; developing and maintaining proper inventory levels of raw materials, fabricated components and purchased raw or finished goods.

BASIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Assist with major purchase (plastics, sheet metal, capital equipment or equivalents) by providing services and information.

· Ensure efficient and steady planning and management of all incoming and outgoing raw or purchased material flow. Manage and resolve all material and production flow issues providing root cause analysis and preventative measures.

· Interview vendors’ agents and representatives for the purpose of determining best business practices; recommend regular and alternative sources of supply.

· Recommend purchases and procedures for endorsement to improve and affect cost savings through contractual agreements and expedite such orders as approved.

· Track, implement and strategize methods and practices to reduce/eliminate material variances.

· Promote and maintain good business relationships with vendors, jobbing manufacturers, etc.

· Analyze and continuously improve the supply chain flow for globally sourced products.

· Ensure all planning parameters affecting the business cycle (e.g. planning horizons, min and max lot sizes, PFEP (plan for every part), queue times, yields, set-up and run times, order intervals and ABC classifications) are monitored and optimized. Ensure full utilization and accuracy of Kanbans, raw materials stocking programs, VMI (Vendor Managed Inventory).

· Participate in tracking and reporting financial and other impacts of materials and production control activities.

· Lead and assist in projects that support the growth of the business including new product implementation and internal product flow improvements.

· With Engineering assistance and endorsement, secure sources of supply on new and improved materials, tools, services and manufacturing supplies.

· Review and approve purchase requisitions with established monetary limitations.

· Charge out all M10000 materials to work orders.

· Contact vendors to expedite delivery of purchases, correct invoice errors, negotiate scrap credits and adjustments and obtain satisfactory arrangements and document the required correspondence.

· Review and plan requirements for purchasing materials.

· Provide expertise and ongoing communication to facility in support of plant and company goals and objectives.

· Work closely with Client Services, Engineering, Procurement, Lean Implementation Teams, and Production Operations to optimize material flow.

· Act as an agent of change, driving continuous improvement activities. Lead/participate in all continuous improvement initiatives though the application of lean principles.

· Prepare periodic reports for management pertinent to dollar volume of purchases, scrap credit and adjustments; recommend alternate or new sources of supply.

· Remain informed of new developments in procurement techniques and practices through professional societies and continuing education.

· Monitor slow moving and obsolete inventory and develop strategic measures to minimize exposure.

· Perform duties as assigned by General Manager.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILTIES

· Directly supervise, instruct, and train employees in the Production/Materials and Purchasing Department and assume responsibility for requisition processing, files and records pertinent to transactions and operations.

· Mentor direct reports in using techniques to solve material flow related problems, e.g. optimizing critical ordering parameters such as lead time, safety stock, loss factor, minimum order quantities with vendors, etc.

· Fulfill supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

Responsibilities include interviewing; training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; performance appraisals; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE/REQUIREMENTS:

  • Relevant four (4) year degree or equivalent years of applicable materials experience; APICS certification a plus.
  • Minimum of 5 years in a Production and Inventory Control environment.

· Ability to use Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook proficiently.

· Working knowledge and experience with an MRP/capacity planning system.
