This role will be responsible for creating standardized testing procedures, analyzing data, and ensuring product compliance with internal and external standards.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in plastics testing, materials characterization, and product design. They will play a critical role in qualifying new formulations, supporting extrusion and compounding operations, and validating finished product performance. This position requires a hands-on, detail-oriented engineer who can independently manage a quality lab environment while collaborating across engineering, production, and product development teams.

This position is based in Phoenix, Arizona, and will require travel (up to 25%) to our Elkhart, Indiana facility for equipment commissioning, testing support, and quality audits.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, document, and implement testing procedures for various plastics properties in accordance with ASTM and ISO standards.
  • Establish and maintain Supersede’s quality laboratory, including equipment calibration, maintenance, and operator training.
  • Conduct materials testing and data analysis to support material qualification, product development, process validation, and production.
  • Design and execute Design of Experiments (DOE) to evaluate process variables and optimize material properties.
  • Design and execute Design of Experiments (DOE) to evaluate end use applications and assemblies.
  • Collaborate with R&D, extrusion, and production teams to ensure consistent quality of recycled and compounded materials.
  • Lead quality control initiatives across raw materials, in-process production, and finished goods.
  • Develop control plans, maintain documentation, sampling procedures, and acceptance criteria for production quality systems to meet all required certification criteria (ISO, ICC, USCG, etc.)
  • Support product certification efforts by preparing test reports, data packages, and technical submissions to accrediting bodies.
  • Utilize CAD software to assist in product and tooling design, testing fixtures, and custom fixture setups.
  • Lead project management of material certifications including defining requirements, coordinating vendors, conducting testing, recording results, and maintaining required records to maintain certifications.
  • Continuously improve testing processes, documentation, and data integrity through lean and Six Sigma methodologies.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Materials Engineering required.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in materials testing, product development, or quality engineering — preferably within plastics extrusion, compounding, or building materials industries.
  • Hands-on experience performing physical and mechanical tests (e.g., tensile, flexural, impact, hardness, melt flow).
  • Proficiency in Design of Experiments (DOE), statistical analysis, and test data interpretation.
  • Experience working with or preparing for accreditation and compliance under ISO, ICC, USCG, or similar standards.
  • Strong understanding of polymer materials, mechanical properties, and failure modes.
  • Experience designing products and fixtures in CAD software (SolidWorks or AutoCAD preferred).
  • Familiarity with quality management systems (QMS), control plans, and process validation.
  • Excellent technical writing and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, and communicate effectively across departments.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% between Phoenix, AZ and Elkhart, IN.
