JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for managing correctional supervisors at the Mitchell County Correctional Institute.

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Monitors outside detail activities to ensure compliance with institution and state rules and regulations;

ensures that inmates are in compliance with policies, and procedures.

  • Conducts audits and investigations.
  • Assists in the call-out of inmate work details; ensures that each inmate is assigned to the correct detail.
  • Supervises correctional officers under the rank of Lieutenant inside the guard lines.
  • Determines and takes appropriate action to address dangerous or emergency situations.
  • Maintains order and discipline among inmates.
  • Supervises, observes, monitors, and controls inmates as they participate in tasks, work details, programs,

recreation, daily living, leisure time, and other activities.

  • Completes reports of deficiencies found and initiates or takes action to correct deficiencies to ensure that fire safety,

general safety, security, and sanitary conditions are properly maintained.

  • Makes rounds of the institution to maintain security; checks locks, fences, alarms, and other security devices.
  • Maintains confidentiality of information in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Serves as institutional duty officer.
  • Transports inmates to medical appointments or other activities.
  • Performs the duties of the Deputy Warden in his or her absence.
  • Maintains control of key and tool inventory.
  • Orders supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Prepares monthly reports.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Knowledge of modern corrections principals and practices.
  • Knowledge of criminal justice system processes.
  • Knowledge of supervisory principles.
  • Knowledge of departmental and county policies and procedures and federal, state and local laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of building maintenance principles.
  • Knowledge of inmate labor laws.
  • Skill in planning, organization and decision making.
  • Skill in maintaining records and preparing reports.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in the use of firearms and restraint equipment.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Deputy Warden assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for

compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include Georgia Department of Corrections regulations, federal and state inmate labor laws, and county and department

policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection and interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • This position consists of varied supervisory, administrative, and security duties. The need to respond to emergency situations

contributes to the complexity of the work.

  • The purpose of this position is to supervise the staff and inmates of the correctional facility. Successful performance helps ensure

the efficient operation of the facility and the safe, secure, legal and humane treatment of inmates.

CONTACTS

  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, inmates, vendors, other county employees, and the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to exchange information, provide services, resolve problems, settle matters, and motivate personnel.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed with the employee sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping,

walking, bending, or crouching. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment

requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.

  • The work is typically performed in an office, in a corrections facility, and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather.

The work may require the use of protective devices and specialized equipment.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

This position has direct supervision over Corrections Sergeant (1) and Corrections Corporal (4).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study

related to the occupational field.

  • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the diverse objectives and functions of the subunits in the division/department in

order to direct and coordinate work within the division/department, usually interpreted to require three to five years of related experience.

  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment

operated.

  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain certification by the Georgia Department of Corrections.
