NATURE OF WORK


The McKinney-Vento Education of Homeless Children and Youth Assistance Act ensures that all children and youth experiencing homelessness have access to the public education to which they are entitled. This position is funded using a yearly Title-1 Grant. The Homeless Education Assistant will assist the District McKinney-Vento Liaison.


ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK

  • Tutoring homeless students
  • Identifying homeless children and youth
  • Ensuring that homeless students can enroll immediately and participate fully in school
  • Informing parents, guardians, or youth of educational rights
  • Supporting unaccompanied youth in school selection and dispute resolution
  • Linking homeless students with educational and other services, including preschool and health services
  • Ensuring the public posting of educational rights through the school district and community
  • Ensuring that disputes are resolved promptly
  • Collaborating with other district programs and community agencies
  • Collecting pertinent data regarding homeless children and youth
  • Assist Social Workers on support and outreach visits with families as needed
  • Other duties that may be assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Working knowledge of effective methods of dealing with children.
  • Understand the McKinney Vento supports available.
  • Working knowledge of the core subjects.
  • Some knowledge of the school organization and its community. Some knowledge of expected behavior of children, that is, basic characteristics of ages and stages.
  • Skill necessary to operate audiovisual equipment and common office machines.
  • Skill to make learning aids that will strengthen lesson plans.
  • Ability to comprehend the purpose of teacher-designed strategies as a fulfillment of the instructional objective.
  • Ability to discern significant student behavior and refer this to the supervisor. Ability to impart information to the child's level of comprehension.
  • Ability to apply impartially and consistently proper methods of recognition, reward, and punishment.
  • Ability to solve independently most minor problems.
  • Ability to follow minimally detailed written and oral instructions without constant supervision. Ability to record and store data accurately.
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of student information


TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE


  • Graduation from high school.
  • Candidates must possess an associate's degree or successful completion of 48 semester hours
