Job Summary

The Master Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, troubleshooting, and executing complex repairs on a wide range of vehicles. This individual serves as the top tier of technical expertise in the facility, utilizing advanced computerized diagnostic equipment, traditional hand tools, and precision measurement instruments. In addition to advanced repair work, the Master Mechanic ensures shop quality control and provides mentorship and guidance to junior technicians.

Key Responsibilities1. Advanced Diagnostics & Troubleshooting

  • Complex Electrical Systems: Map, trace, and repair intricate electrical wiring, body control modules (BCMs), and multiplexing/CAN-bus communication networks.
  • Computerized Diagnostics: Master the use of advanced factory and aftermarket scan tools to read live stream data, interpret trouble codes, and perform module programming/flashing.
  • Driveability & Performance: Diagnose complex engine performance issues, including advanced fuel injection, variable valve timing (VVT), and forced induction systems.

2. Major Mechanical Repairs

  • Powertrain Overhauls: Perform complete teardowns, rebuilds, and replacements of internal combustion engines and complex automatic/manual transmissions.
  • Chassis & Safety Systems: Diagnose and repair advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), anti-lock braking systems (ABS), electronic stability control, and complex suspension geometry.
  • Evolving Technology: Service and troubleshoot high-voltage systems in Hybrid (HEV) and Electric Vehicles (EV) safely, adhering to proper de-energizing protocols.

3. Quality Assurance & Mentorship

  • Shop "Backstop": Step in to solve the "nightmare vehicles" that lower-level technicians have struggled to diagnose or repair.
  • Apprentice Training: Actively mentor, coach, and supervise apprentice or C-level technicians to improve their mechanical skills and safety habits.
  • RO Documentation: Ensure accurate, legally compliant documentation of all diagnostic steps, measurements, and repairs performed on the Repair Order (RO).

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Certifications: Current ASE Master Automobile Technician Certification (Tests A1 through A8). Note: L1 (Advanced Engine Performance) or EV certifications are highly preferred.
  • Experience: A minimum of 5–8 years of professional automotive repair experience in a high-volume dealership or independent shop.
  • Tooling: Possession of a comprehensive set of professional hand tools, pneumatic tools, and diagnostic equipment appropriate for a master-level role.
  • Physical Demands: Ability to lift up to 70 lbs, work in confined or awkward positions under vehicles, and stand for extended periods in varying shop temperatures.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $35.00 - $45.00 per hour
