Mechanic Assistant

Job Summary About the Role

Assist with enhancing the physical appearance and experience of the Park District for residents and visitors to our parks and facilities by maintaining and servicing fleet vehicles and equipment for all Departments.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

This position is well suited for someone with a friendly and positive personality who is productive and shows initiative, is an effective written and oral communicator, is reliable and safety minded.

Required: High school diploma required. Must be at least 18 years old. General understanding of the principles and mechanics of gasoline, diesel, and small engines, including both 2-cycle and 4-cycle engines. Familiarity with occupational hazards and safety protocols in the workplace. Ability to operate motorized equipment efficiently. Proficient in using standard hand tools and equipment. Assist in identifying and diagnosing issues in maintenance equipment, as well as making necessary adjustments. Scheduled shift hours are Monday through Friday, 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM, with weekends as needed. Start times may vary based on department needs and special events. This position offers 30-40 hours per week, with a maximum of 1,000 hours per year. A valid Illinois State Driver’s License is required. Maintain current CPR/AED/First Aid Certification and DCFS Mandated Reporter Certification or obtain certification within 30 days of hire.

Preferred: Trade school courses leading towards ASE certifications specializing in steering, suspension and engine repair is preferred. One-two years in general repair shop with ability to assist in variety of automotive and equipment service repairs.

Essential Functions of the Position or Role

Park District Competencies

  • Follow all departmental safety rules that pertain to the duties performed and support all aspects of Park District’s safety and risk management program.
  • Work cooperatively and collaboratively with residents, colleagues, the public, PDRMA and other agencies or organizations as delegated.
  • Recommends improvements and efficiencies to better accomplish individual and district goals in the best interests of the St. Charles Park District community.
  • Comply with park district policies and administrative procedures.

Responsibilities

Under the direction and supervision of the Superintendent of Parks and Planning, Assistant Superintendents of Parks, and Fleet Manager, Mechanics shall complete their assigned duties to the best of their abilities and be ever mindful of the best interests of the St. Charles Park District and of fellow employees. This position requires extensive knowledge and ability to:

  • Operate motor equipment as needed or required.
  • Follow instructions and direction of Fleet Manager and Vehicle and Equipment Mechanics.
  • Assist Mechanics with Vehicle and Equipment repairs and PM servicing.
  • Perform basic maintenance, service on vehicles and equipment.
  • Perform tire repairs and replacement.
  • Operate equipment, lifts, and tools as needed and required to perform repair work.
  • Perform weekly and quarterly inspections vehicles, trailers, tractors, mowers and to variety of mechanically driven equipment, including hand powered equipment.
  • Pickup and drop off parts for equipment and vehicles to various vendors and St. Charles Park District locations.
  • Assist in keeping Shop area clean and organized.
  • Assist in keeping parts inventory organized and in keeping Fleet mechanics aware of low stock items.
  • Effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Work over and above required daily hours when necessary.

Administrative

  • Maintain records of each piece of equipment and vehicle.

Marginal Functions of the Position or Role

  • Assist with snow removal.
  • Assist with special events.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
