1. Maintenance and Repair

The primary duty involves hands-on technical work to keep trucks running efficiently.

  • Preventive Maintenance (PM): Perform routine and scheduled maintenance, including oil changes, lubrication, filter replacements, and fluid checks. Strictly follow manufacturer and company PM schedules to maximize vehicle uptime.
  • Diagnostic Testing: Use specialized diagnostic tools (manual and computer-based) to identify mechanical and electrical faults in engines, transmissions, brake systems, and electronic control modules (ECMs).
  • System Repair: Repair and replace major truck components, including diesel engines, transmissions, clutches, axles, and steering systems.
  • Brake System Service: Inspect, repair, and adjust air brake systems and related components (compressors, air lines, chambers) to maintain critical safety standards.
  • Electrical Troubleshooting: Diagnose and repair electrical issues, including problems with the charging system, starting system, and vehicle lighting.

2. Safety and Compliance

  • Safety Inspections: Conduct thorough pre-trip and mandatory annual safety inspections (like DOT or MOT checks) to ensure the vehicle meets all legal safety requirements before being released for service.
  • Emissions Systems: Maintain and repair complex emission control components (e.g., DPF, EGR, SCR) to ensure environmental compliance.
  • Regulatory Adherence: Ensure all repair work conforms to federal, state, and local transportation safety regulations.

3. Documentation and Workshop Duties

Accountability and efficiency require careful record-keeping and a focus on safety in the work place.

  • Work Order Documentation: Accurately record all work performed, including parts used, labor hours, and the diagnosis/solution on the Work Order or Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Tool and Bay Maintenance: Maintain all tools and equipment in good working order and keep the work area clean, organized, and free of safety hazards.
  • Shop Safety: Follow all workshop safety procedures, including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and safe operation of lifting equipment (jacks, hoists).

3. Diagnostics, Troubleshooting, and Analysis (The Core Skill)

The mechanic must act as a precise investigator, using both advanced technology and deep mechanical knowledge to identify the root cause of failures.

  • Computerized Diagnostics: Utilize specialized diagnostic software (e.g., Cummins Insite, Detroit Diagnostic Link, PACCAR DAVIE4) and Electronic Service Tools (ESTs) to connect to vehicle Electronic Control Modules (ECMs). Interpret fault codes, parameter settings, and data stream values to accurately pinpoint problems in engines, transmissions, and emission systems.
  • Systematic Troubleshooting: Execute a methodical, step-by-step approach to isolating faults, starting with driver reports and progressing through visual inspection, performance testing, and component testing (electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic).
  • Vibration and Noise Analysis: Diagnose unusual noises, vibrations, or operational performance issues that may indicate severe component wear, imbalance, or alignment problems in drive trains, suspensions, and brake assemblies.
  • Fuel System Analysis: Test fuel pressure, analyze fuel quality, and diagnose failures in high-pressure common rail (HPCR) injection systems, which are critical to modern diesel engine performance and emissions.

2. Comprehensive Repair and Component Overhaul

  • Engine Overhaul and Repair: Perform in-chassis or out-of-chassis rebuilds of heavy-duty diesel engines. This includes cylinder head removal, piston and liner replacement, crankshaft inspection, and timing adjustments.
  • Transmission and Drivetrain Service: Service, repair, and overhaul automatic and manual transmissions, clutches, differentials, and drive shafts. Ensure proper alignment and backlash are set according to OEM specifications.
  • Brake and Air System Maintenance: Service, repair, and replace complex air brake systems, including compressors, air dryers, reservoirs, brake chambers, and foundation brakes (drums/discs). Diagnose and repair anti-lock braking (ABS) and electronic stability control (ESC) systems.
  • Electrical System Repair: Diagnose and repair complex low-voltage electrical circuits, addressing shorts, opens, high resistance, and ground issues. Repair or replace alternators, starters, batteries, and lighting systems.
  • Hydraulic System Repair: For specialized trucks (e.g., dump trucks, refuse haulers), diagnose and repair hydraulic pumps, motors, cylinders, and control valves.

3. Preventative Maintenance and Regulatory Compliance

  • Scheduled PM Execution: Strictly follow detailed Preventive Maintenance (PM) schedules, performing thorough inspections (e.g., A, B, and C service checks), oil changes, lubrication, and fluid top-offs.
  • Mandatory Inspections: Execute regulatory compliance inspections (e.g., annual safety inspections, pre-trip inspections, DOT/MOT mandated checks) and sign off on documentation, taking legal responsibility for the vehicle's roadworthiness.
  • Tire and Suspension Management: Inspect and maintain vehicle suspension components (springs, shocks, air bags) and manage tire pressure, rotation, and replacement to optimize handling, fuel economy, and tire life.
  • Emissions System Maintenance (EGR/DPF/SCR): Service, clean, or replace components of the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems to ensure the truck meets stringent environmental standards.

4. Documentation, Communication, and Safety

Every action must be recorded accurately, and communication must be clear to ensure efficient workshop operations and legal accountability.

  • Work Order Documentation: Accurately record all work performed on the Work Order, including the specific task, time spent on the repair (labor hours), parts utilized (including part numbers), and the final cause of failure and correction. This data is critical for warranty claims and fleet operating costs.
  • Communication with Supervisor: Proactively communicate major issues, unexpected delays, or the need for additional parts or specialized equipment to the Mechanic Supervisor or Fleet Manager.
  • Workshop Safety Compliance: Adhere strictly to all workshop safety policies, including using proper personal protective equipment (PPE), following Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures when working on high-energy systems, and maintaining a clean, organized, and hazard-free work bay.
  • Tool and Equipment Care: Maintain and calibrate personal tools and ensure the proper operation and care of all specialized workshop equipment (e.g., lifts, overhead cranes, alignment racks, computerized diagnostic carts).
