The City of Redding is seeking a skilled Mechanic to diagnose, inspect and repair mechanical defects on City owned Diesel and gasoline powered automotive, construction, fire apparatus, towed equipment, and emergency standby generators.

We are looking for someone to

  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical defects on all types of equipment
  • Diagnose and repair computer-controlled vehicles and equipment, emission systems and related components
  • Perform minor and major tune-up and overhauls on automotive and heavy-duty engines and transmissions
  • Perform major metal work such as cutting, welding, soldering, drilling, machining, and fabrication
  • Perform emergency field repairs to equipment and vehicles

Qualifications we're looking for

Knowledge of:

  • The techniques, theory, methods and care of overhauling and repairing diesel and gasoline powered internal combustion engines, equipment and related components, including drive, fuel and electrical systems,
  • preventive maintenance inspection methods, electrical, computerized powertrain management and related systems, hydraulics, mechanics, and the methods, materials and tools used in the light and heavy equipment repair trade;
  • occupational hazards and standard safety precautions necessary in the performance of work.

Ability to:

  • Interact effectively with the public and employees
  • Read and interpret pertinent laws, codes, safety orders, repair manuals, wiring diagrams, schematics, and screens on PC based scopes, diagnostic software, online technical repair databases, and scan tools
  • Operate PC based computers: accurately determine mechanical repair needs and perform journey level equipment mechanical work
  • Prepare cost estimates for time, labor, and materials
  • Safely operate City vehicles

Education, Experience and Special Requirements:

  • Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying
  • Education would include a high school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by specialized training in the maintenance and repair of gas and diesel-powered equipment AND a minimum of two years of journey-level mechanic experience
  • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship or possession of mechanical certifications from a professionally recognized institution is highly desirable, OR four years of skilled journey-level experience in automotive and heavy equipment repair work
  • Experience and certification in computerized powertrain control is highly desirable
  • Possession of an appropriate valid California driver's license, or the ability to acquire one within ten days of employment. Must obtain California Class A driver's license within six months of employment.
  • Must be able to enter and work in confined spaces, participate in the Confined Space Program, and perform confined space rescue if needed.
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification highly desirable. Successful completion of ASE Series test Medium & Heavy-Duty Truck Series T8 Preventive Maintenance Inspection PMI is required upon completion of probation. Note: The City reimburses employee's cost associated with these certifications.

Required Tools:

  • Journey-level hand tools sized to a minimum of 1 1/2".

Examination Process: An oral board interview, written examination, practical exercise, or any combination thereof, may be administered.

Selection Process:

Final appointment is contingent upon:

  • Positive past employment references
  • Review of a driver history record (depending on position)
  • Passing a city paid fingerprint criminal conviction check (applicants 18 and older)
  • Passing of a pre-employment medical exam and drug and alcohol screening test (depending on position)

Veteran’s Credit: Applicants who attach a copy of the DD-214 to their application indicating “Honorable Discharge” from military service and receive a passing score on the examination process will have two (2) additional points added to their final examination score.
