Mechanical Commissioning Engineer - HVAC

OVERVIEW
We are seeking a Mechanical Commissioning Engineer to support commissioning delivery for building and mission critical/data center facilities across Texas. This role plans and executes mechanical commissioning activities from design review through functional performance testing, integrated testing support, and final turnover. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with HVAC systems, chilled water plants, cooling towers, and compressed air systems, and can lead field execution in a safe, structured, and client-facing manner.

Key Responsibilities

• Review OPR/BOD, drawings, specifications, and submittals; identify commissioning risks, constructability issues, and testability gaps.
• Develop and manage commissioning deliverables: commissioning plans, system readiness checklists, pre-functional checklists (PFCs), and functional performance test (FPT) procedures.
• Lead field verification and PFC execution for HVAC equipment and systems, including AHUs, CRAHs/CRACs, chillers, pumps, cooling towers, heat exchangers, hydronic piping, and controls.
• Plan and execute FPTs for chilled water systems (primary/secondary/variable primary), tower/heat rejection systems, and related sequences of operation.
• Commission compressed air systems (compressors, dryers, receivers, filters, distribution, and controls) including performance, dew point, and pressure stability checks as applicable to the facility.
• Coordinate with GC/EPC, MEP trades, TAB contractors, controls/BMS vendors, and owner/operations teams to confirm readiness, schedules, and safe test execution.
• Validate controls and BMS integration (trend logs, alarms, interlocks, safeties, permissives) and confirm sequences align with the approved narrative.
• Support integrated testing activities impacting mechanical systems (e.g., power transfers, generator events, chilled water recovery, alarm/monitoring integration).
• Document test results, deficiencies, and corrective actions; verify closure and support final turnover packages (O&M manuals, as-builts, training, and acceptance documentation).
• Promote a strong safety culture and comply with site HSE requirements, LOTO, confined space, hot work, chemical handling, and lifting/rigging controls as applicable.

Required Qualifications

• 10+ years of mechanical commissioning experience on commercial, industrial, mission critical, or data center projects (or equivalent field engineering experience with commissioning responsibility).
• Demonstrated experience commissioning HVAC systems and central plants, including chilled water production/distribution and cooling towers/heat rejection.
• Working knowledge of mechanical system controls, sequences of operation, and BMS integration (ability to interpret points lists, I/O maps, and trend data).
• Familiarity with TAB processes and ability to coordinate TAB and commissioning activities for acceptance and performance verification.
• Strong technical writing skills—able to produce clear procedures, checklists, and test reports.
• Ability to work in active construction environments, coordinate multiple stakeholders, and communicate professionally with owners/clients.
• Willingness to travel to project sites and work flexible hours during test windows (including nights/weekends as required).

Preferred Qualifications / Certifications

• Commissioning certifications (e.g., ACG CxA, ASHRAE CPMP/BCxP, BCA CCP/CCxP) or equivalent demonstrated commissioning leadership.
• Experience with data center cooling topologies (N+1/2N plants, CRAH/CRAC, airside/waterside economizers, containment strategies) and ASHRAE TC 9.9 environmental guidance.
• Controls background (DDC/BAS/BMS), scripting and trending workflows, and familiarity with common platforms.
