Position Overview:
We are seeking a skilled and motivated Mechanical Design Engineer II to join our engineering team in Roanoke, Virginia. This role is essential to support the Commercial, Manufacturing, and Field Service teams with innovative designs for fixed and mobile equipment used in the civil explosives industry. The successful candidate will follow designs through the entire lifecycle - working with the Commercial team on concept designs and specifications, Manufacturing on production and sustaining activities, and Field Service to provide comprehensive end-user support. This position is ideal for an engineer with 2-5 years of experience who is ready to contribute to complex equipment design projects.
Key Responsibilities:
Design and Engineering:
- Prepare design calculations, solid models, detailed drafts, and bills of materials (BOMs) for equipment components and assemblies
- Translate engineering concepts into practical parts and assembly designs that meet specifications and performance requirements
- Apply Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles to sheet metal fabrication and weldment designs
- Utilize Finite Element Analysis (FEA) principles to validate design integrity and performance
Material Selection and Cost Estimation:
- Specify raw materials and components based on equipment requirements, performance criteria, and cost considerations
- Develop accurate cost estimates for concept designs to support project planning and budgeting
Testing and Validation:
- Generate comprehensive test plans to qualify and validate new designs
- Apply mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills under pressure, both on the shop floor and in field environments
Documentation and Collaboration:
- Compile design review reports and hardware/equipment documentation as necessary
- Work collaboratively with Commercial, Manufacturing, and Field Service teams throughout the product lifecycle
- Travel domestically and internationally (less than 5%) to support product development and Field Service needs
Requirements:
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering
- 2-5 years of relevant experience in an engineering/manufacturing environment
- Proven ability to translate engineering concepts into practical parts and assembly designs
- Familiarity with sheet metal fabrication and design of weldments, applying Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles
- Working knowledge of control theory and mechanical systems
- Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to troubleshoot under pressure, both on the shop floor and in the field
- Competency in current CAD software packages
- Understanding of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) principles and practice
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
- Excellent administrative, interpersonal, and communication skills
- Ability to work as an individual contributor with a team-oriented mindset
Preferred Skills:
- Experience in off-highway or heavy equipment design and manufacturing
- Control theory knowledge with a concentration in off-highway equipment applications
- Proficiency in Solid Edge within a Teamcenter PLM environment
- Hands-on experience with ANSYS or similar FEA software
- Knowledge of civil explosives industry equipment and applications
