Join our team and take ownership of the full design process in a dynamic fabrication environment!
Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled Mechanical Designer to lead the end-to-end design of metal fabrication projects. This role goes beyond basic drafting—you will own the complete design spectrum, from concept to fabrication-ready drawings. You will perform technical calculations (such as loads, forces, and material stresses), specify appropriate materials, ensure Design for Manufacturability (DFM), and create detailed 3D models and production drawings using SolidWorks CAD software. This position is ideal for a technically apt professional with strong math skills and experience (or education) in CAD/mechanical technology from community college or equivalent programs—no engineering degree required.
Key Responsibilities
- Translate customer requirements, sketches, and specifications into complete, manufacturable designs for metal products (sheet metal, weldments, structural fabrications, assemblies, etc.).
- Perform basic engineering calculations including loads, forces, tolerances, bend allowances, material strengths, and structural considerations to inform design decisions.
- Select and specify materials (e.g., steel, aluminum, stainless) based on application needs, cost, availability, and fabrication processes.
- Create and maintain 3D models, assemblies, flat patterns, and detailed fabrication/assembly drawings using SolidWorks CAD software.
- Apply sheet metal design best practices, including k-factors, bend deductions, reliefs, and DFM principles to optimize for laser cutting, forming, welding, and assembly.
- Collaborate with fabrication, welding, and production teams to resolve design issues, support prototyping, and ensure designs are producible and cost-effective.
- Generate Bills of Materials (BOMs), revise drawings based on feedback, and maintain design documentation.
- Participate in design reviews and contribute to continuous improvement of design processes and standards.
- Support shop floor as needed during build and installation phases.
Qualifications
- Associate's degree in CAD, Mechanical Design Technology, Engineering Technology, or related field from a community college (or equivalent experience).
- 2+ years of hands-on experience in mechanical/CAD design, preferably in metal fabrication, sheet metal, or manufacturing environments.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD software—SolidWorks (sheet metal module experience a strong plus), Inventor, or similar; ability to create detailed drawings and models.
- Strong technical aptitude with demonstrated skills in math, geometry, and basic engineering calculations (hand calcs or software-assisted).
- Knowledge of metal fabrication processes (laser cutting, press brake forming, plate and pipe roll forming, welding, machining) and material properties.
- Understanding of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) per ASME Y14.5.
- Excellent attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and ability to manage multiple projects.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, customer specs, and technical documents.
- Strong communication skills for collaborating across teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with SolidWorks sheet metal tools, flat pattern development, and bend tables.
- Familiarity with programming support for CNC equipment (e.g., laser or press brake).
- Background in structural or load-bearing designs.
- Experience in a job shop or custom fabrication setting.
What We Offer
- Competitive salary based on experience.
- Benefits package including direct primary care, dental, vision, life insurance, 401(k), quarterly bonus program, PTO, and paid holidays.
- Opportunities for professional growth and skill development in a supportive team environment.
- Modern workspace with up-to-date CAD tools and direct involvement in real-world fabrication projects.
If you are a motivated designer ready to take full responsibility for creating high-quality, buildable metal products, we want to hear from you!
How to Apply
Please submit your resume and a brief cover letter highlighting your relevant CAD experience and any metal fabrication projects. We look forward to reviewing your application!
