Mechanical Designer - Tooling & Fixtures

About Us

Thermaline is a growing stainless steel fabrication shop building high-quality heat exchangers and sanitary components for the food, beverage, bio/pharmaceutical, and industrial markets. We take pride in our work and the team we’ve built.

Position Summary

The Mechanical Designer – Tooling & Fixture is responsible for helping design the welding fixtures, jigs, and production tooling that drive consistency and throughput on our shop floor. This role partners closely with the engineering, welding, and fabrication teams to translate product designs into practical, manufacturable tooling, and to support sheet metal, tube, pipe and weldment design across active production programs. The ideal candidate is a hands-on designer who is comfortable working between CAD and the shop floor.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design welding fixtures, assembly jigs, and production tooling in SolidWorks to support stainless steel fabrication & weldments.
  • Develop sheet metal parts, weldments, and detailed assembly models for new and existing product lines.
  • Produce detailed manufacturing drawings and assist with drawing release and revision control.
  • Collaborate with welders, fabricators, and machinists to validate fixture designs, troubleshoot fit-up issues, and iterate based on shop floor feedback.
  • Provide on-the-floor support during fixture commissioning, first-article builds, and production troubleshooting.
  • Specify hardware, materials, and finishes appropriate for sanitary and welded stainless applications.
  • Maintain organized CAD files, part numbers, and BOMs in alignment with Thermaline's design and revision control standards.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of fixture design standards, drawing templates, and engineering procedures.

What We're Looking For

  • 2+ years of mechanical design experience, ideally in a fabrication, weldment, or tooling environment.
  • Strong proficiency in SolidWorks, including parts, assemblies, sheet metal, and weldments.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T (ASME Y14.5).
  • Experience designing welding fixtures, jigs, or production tooling is strongly preferred.
  • Comfortable on the shop floor — able to take measurements, work with welders and fabricators, and iterate designs based on real-world feedback.
  • Familiarity with stainless steel, sanitary fabrication, or industrial piping is a plus.
  • Self-motivated and organized, with strong attention to detail.
  • Reliable, positive, and a good fit for our drama-free team culture.
