1. Preventive Maintenance (PM)
- Prepare and follow daily, weekly, monthly, and annual PM schedules
- Inspect and maintain:
- Spindle condition (noise, vibration, temperature)
- Ball screws, LM guides, and guideways
- Lubrication systems (oil/grease levels, pumps, lines)
- Coolant systems (tank, filters, pumps)
- Check hydraulic and pneumatic systems for leaks and pressure settings
- Maintain proper machine leveling and alignment
2. Breakdown Maintenance
- Diagnose and rectify:
- Mechanical failures (bearings, couplings, gears)
- Spindle issues (run-out, overheating)
- Axis movement problems (backlash, stick-slip)
- Coordinate with electrical engineers for control-related faults
- Minimize machine downtime by quick root cause analysis
3. Spindle & Axis Maintenance
- Monitor spindle run-out, taper condition, and tool clamping force
- Replace:
- Spindle bearings (if in scope)
- Ball screws and thrust bearings
- Way covers and wipers
- Perform axis backlash adjustment and geometry checks
4. Tool Changer & ATC Maintenance
- Inspect and maintain:
- Tool magazine
- Tool arm, grippers, and sensors
- Adjust tool change timing and alignment
- Replace worn grippers, springs, and proximity sensors
5. Hydraulic & Pneumatic Systems
- Maintain hydraulic units:
- Pressure setting
- Oil cleanliness and temperature
- Service pneumatic FRL units
- Ensure proper operation of:
- Tool unclamping
- Pallet clamping (if applicable)
6. Coolant & Chip Management
- Maintain coolant concentration and filtration
- Service chip conveyors, augers, and pumps
- Prevent chip accumulation affecting axis travel or sensors
7. Accuracy & Geometry Control
- Conduct:
- Ball bar tests
- Laser alignment tests (with service support if needed)
- Ensure machine accuracy:
- Flatness
- Squareness
- Positioning repeatability
- Take corrective actions for deviations
8. Spare Parts & Documentation
- Maintain critical spares inventory (belts, bearings, seals, sensors)
- Prepare maintenance reports and breakdown history
- Maintain OEM manuals and maintenance checklists
9. Safety & Compliance
- Follow LOTO (Lockout/Tagout) procedures
- Ensure machine guards, interlocks, and safety switches are functional
- Promote safe working practices in the shop
10. Continuous Improvement
- Analyze recurring breakdowns
- Implement Kaizen / TPM activities
- Suggest modifications to improve machine reliability and life
11. Coordination & Training
- Coordinate with:
- Production
- Quality
- OEM service engineers
- Train operators on:
- Basic machine care
- Early fault identification
Skills Required
- Strong knowledge of machine tool mechanics
- Ability to read mechanical drawings
- Hands-on experience with VMC/HMC maintenance
