NCX Corporation | Mechanical Engineer (R&D)
Location: Research Triangle Park (RTP), NC – On-site
Position Type: Full-Time
Reports To: R&D Director
About NCX
NCX is an early-stage nanotechnology company fundamentally reshaping the medical and security imaging industries. By designing and manufacturing next-generation X-ray tubes using carbon nanotubes (CNTs), we produce significantly clearer 3D images than traditional systems. We are a highly motivated, high-intensity team of independent thinkers who value respectful challenge, deep creativity, and a shared commitment to engineering excellence.
The Role
We are seeking an energetic, hands-on Mechanical Engineer to serve as a vital, core part of our R&D team. In this role, you won't just sit behind a screen; you will own the entire lifecycle of complex components—from initial CAD concept and rigorous design analysis to hands-on lab prototyping and manufacturing setup. If you thrive in fast-paced, fluid environments and love seeing your designs physically built, this is your sandbox.
Key Responsibilities
- Precision Design: Design complex metal and ceramic parts and assemblies requiring precision, high-tolerance dimensions.
- CAD Database Ownership: Review, organize, and complete engineering drawings; Translate and consolidate existing solid models (including Inventor and FreeCAD) into our primary SolidWorks database.
- End-to-End Project Ownership: Coordinate across disciplines to extract project requirements from our senior development team and drive projects through to successful completion.
- Hands-on Prototyping: Build laboratory test systems, proof-of-concept rigs, and specialized equipment used to manufacture X-ray tubes.
- R&D Manufacturing: Manufacture and assemble low-volume components and prototypes.
- Rigorous Engineering Analysis: Perform tolerance stack-ups, risk assessments, root cause analysis, and DFMEAs.
- Process Documentation: Develop, document, and standardize procedures to smoothly transition prototypes into the manufacturing process.
Core Qualifications
- Education & Experience: BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering with 8+ years of proven experience designing and developing production-level products.
- CAD Mastery: 2,000+ hours of experience with SolidWorks (or highly comparable standard 3D CAD software).
- GD&T Expertise: Strong working knowledge and practical application of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
- Analytical Skills: Solid foundational engineering skills, particularly in structural and thermal analysis.
- Joining Technologies: Hands-on experience or deep familiarity with welding and brazing technologies.
- Startup DNA: Proven ability to thrive in an early-stage company environment with limited instruction, high ambiguity, and rapid timelines.
- Vendor Management: Strong capability to evaluate third-party suppliers and collaboratively resolve technical issues.
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills for cross-functional teamwork.
Nice-to-Haves (Beneficial Skills)
- Background in Materials Science or hands-on X-ray tube technology experience.
- Experience with automated manufacturing systems.
- Knowledge of CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) software.
