Mechanical Engineer (AEC Industry)

Title: Mechanical Engineer/Associate
Market: All of our mechanical team members have an opportunity to serve across many markets
Reports To: Team Leader of Mechanical Engineering Department
I. Summary
Mechanical Engineers and Associates operate under general supervision, applying their technical expertise to develop innovative solutions or enhance existing methods, processes, and products. Key responsibilities include contributing to the planning, execution, and evaluation of strategies designed to achieve project objectives efficiently and cost-effectively.
An Engineer is a licensed professional who has obtained a Professional Engineer (PE) certification, demonstrating advanced competency and legal authority to practice engineering. An Associate is an individual who has earned an accredited bachelor’s degree in engineering but has not yet achieved PE licensure. Associates may also have successfully completed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination as part of their progression toward professional licensure.
II. Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Core Function
  • Perform engineering tasks and work with designers to produce projects in design.
  • Assist Construction Administration representatives in reviewing submittals and answering questions from projects in the field.
General
  • Working knowledge of miscellaneous office equipment technology such as phones, copiers, plotters, scanners and computers.
  • Willingness to accept responsibility and accountability.

  • Keep accurate records of billable time and submits timesheets on time.
  • Completes tasks thoroughly and on time.
  • Effectively understand and can reiterate technical information.
  • Understand and follows company structure.

  • Understand floor plans, sections, details and architectural concepts.
  • Work within multi-discipline project teams to develop drawing and specification documents for issuance to architects, contractors and building owners.
  • Proactively communicate any concerns, problems or technical decisions that impact the project.
  • Offer solutions and value engineering where required.
Activities
  • Participate in company technical training to gain understanding of process and knowledge of field.
  • Collaboration on projects to develop a plan for actions required to meet deadlines.
  • Creating, organizing and plotting construction sets for issuance to the field.
  • Preparation and modification of engineering drawings using computer-aided systems such as AutoCad or Revit. Modification includes complex drawing cleanup, in depth mechanical calculations and mechanical distribution setup.
  • Active and participating member in a professional organization or society.
Mechanical Engineering and Design
  • Typical systems designed at this level are packaged and terminal equipment, variable and constant volume air distribution including ductwork routing and sizing and air device selection and sizing.
  • Setup of construction drawing set including basic mechanical system layout and connections. Typical systems designed at this level are packaged and terminal equipment selections and air distribution including ductwork routing and sizing and air device selection and sizing.
  • Understands mechanical systems and principals used in design.
  • Performs advanced HVAC load calculations.
  • Performs and demonstrates HVAC energy compliance using ComCheck, Title 24, FlaCom and other energy compliance software and provides supporting documentation.
  • Develop engineering sketches or schematics, layouts, details and/or drawings.
  • Perform advanced HVAC calculations such as external static pressure, system and zone heat losses and gains and ventilation calculations for complicated systems.
  • Sizes air devices, ductwork and piping.
  • Size, select and layout HVAC equipment and systems.
  • Learning and understanding applicable building codes.
  • Ability to perform an energy model and interpret model results.
  • Research and prepare basic reports for feasibility studies, life cycle cost analysis and other similar reports.
  • Able to edit specifications with assistance from senior engineers.
  • Perform basic opinion of costs.
  • Perform detailed mechanical surveys.
  • Creates trainings to teach others basic tasks with the department.

III. Supervisory Responsibilities
There may be direct supervisory responsibilities associated with this person. Studio Directors may assign designers or co-ops to be under engineer’s supervision.
IV. Qualifications
Education
  • Bachelor’s Degree (B.S) from a four-year university or equivalent experience is required.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate preferred with goal of obtaining a P.E. license.
    • To be an Engineer in training requires passing of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
Experience
  • Any previous consulting engineering or construction field experience is desired.
  • Preferred similar co-op experience.

Written - Writes clearly and informatively with a high level of sophistication; Presents numerical data effectively.
Computer Skills
Basic computing skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office programs including MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook, MS Access.
Proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit is desired.
