Job Title: Mechanical Engineer (DC focused- Procurement & Delivery)
Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled Data Center Mechanical Engineer to oversee the design,
procurement, and delivery of critical mechanical infrastructure. This role combines
deep technical expertise in HVAC, cooling, and mechanical systems with strong
procurement, vendor management, and project delivery skills to ensure efficient,
reliable, and cost-effective data center operations.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering & Technical Oversight
- Design, review, and optimize mechanical systems for data centers, including
cooling, HVAC, chillers, CRAC/CRAH units, pumps, and piping.
- Perform load calculations, equipment sizing, and energy efficiency
assessments.
- Ensure compliance with ASHRAE, local building codes, and data center best
practices.
- Collaborate with electrical engineers, architects, and operations teams to
ensure holistic system integration.
Procurement & Vendor Management
- Develop specifications and technical requirements for mechanical equipment
procurement.
- Evaluate vendor proposals, conduct technical bid analysis, and support vendor
selection.
- Manage procurement schedules to align with project timelines and budgets.
- Negotiate with suppliers for cost, lead time, and warranty optimization.
- Track and manage purchase orders, delivery schedules, and logistics.
Project Delivery
- Coordinate with contractors, vendors, and internal stakeholders to ensure timely
delivery and installation of mechanical systems.
- Oversee factory acceptance tests (FAT) and site acceptance tests (SAT) for
mechanical equipment.
- Monitor project progress, resolve technical issues, and ensure adherence to
quality and safety standards.
- Support commissioning activities and handover to operations.
Operations & Continuous Improvement
- Provide engineering support for ongoing data center operations and capacity
planning.
- Identify opportunities for efficiency improvements, cost savings, and
sustainability initiatives (e.g., free cooling, water-side economizers).
- Maintain documentation, drawings, and equipment specifications.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field (Master’s
preferred).
- 5+ years of experience in data center mechanical systems
engineering (design, construction, or operations).
- Proven experience in procurement, vendor management, and project
delivery.
- Strong knowledge of HVAC, chilled water systems, DX systems, cooling
towers, and CRAC/CRAH units.
- Familiarity with ASHRAE 90.1, ASHRAE TC9.9, and local regulatory codes.
- Experience with project management tools and procurement systems (SAP,
Oracle, etc.).
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.
Preferred Skills
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or Chartered Engineer status.
- Data center certifications (e.g., Uptime Institute Accredited Tier
Designer, CDCP, DCPro).
- Knowledge of sustainability practices (LEED, ISO 50001, water/energy
efficiency).
- Experience with hyperscale data centers or large-scale colocation facilities.
- Exposure to liquid cooling technologies (direct-to-chip, immersion cooling,
rear-door heat exchangers).
- Understanding of high-density AI/ML data center requirements, including
unique thermal loads and accelerated hardware cooling challenges.
