Owben Ltd are Electrical and Mechanical Engineering contractors delivering projects across heavy industrial, manufacturing and commercial environments throughout the UK. Our clients include organisations such as Nissan Motor Manufacturing UK, Amazon and BWSC.
Due to continued growth, we are looking to recruit an experienced Mechanical Fabricator / Weekend Site Installer to join our Sunderland-based team.
This is a hybrid role combining weekday workshop fabrication activities with weekend and shutdown-based site installation works within live industrial environments.
Role Overview
The successful candidate will predominantly undertake fabrication activities during the working week from our Sunderland workshop, with regular weekend and shutdown works supporting on-site mechanical installations across customer facilities.
The role is ideally suited to somebody who enjoys a varied position involving both workshop manufacturing and practical installation work on industrial sites.
Candidates must be comfortable working within fast-paced manufacturing and industrial environments where safety, quality and programme delivery are critical.
Standard weekday working hours are Monday to Friday, 08:00 – 16:00; however, flexibility is essential due to the regular requirement for overtime, shutdowns and weekend installation works.
Main Duties & Responsibilities Workshop Fabrication Duties (Weekdays)
- Read and interpret technical and fabrication drawings.
- Fabricate components using mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium materials.
- Manufacture brackets, supports, platforms, frames and bespoke fabricated items.
- Carry out MIG welding to a high standard.
- Fabricate using box section, flat plate, channel, angle and structural steel sections.
- Use workshop machinery and hand tools safely and effectively.
- Assemble fabricated and mechanical components accurately in line with drawings and specifications.
- Maintain high standards of quality, housekeeping and workshop safety.
Site Installation Duties (Weekends / Shutdowns)
- Undertake mechanical and structural installation works on customer sites.
- Install fabricated steelwork, platforms, machinery supports, containment and production equipment.
- Support plant modifications, maintenance and machinery relocation activities.
- Work safely within live industrial and manufacturing environments.
- Use access equipment, lifting equipment and power tools safely.
- Work closely with supervisors, project managers and client representatives to deliver works safely and efficiently.
- Complete site works in accordance with RAMS, permit systems and company health & safety procedures.
Skills & Experience Required/Essential
- NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Fabrication, Welding or Mechanical Engineering.
- Proven fabrication and welding experience within industrial environments.
- Strong MIG welding capability.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
- Experience undertaking site installation activities.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- Flexible approach to overtime, shutdowns and weekend working.
- Strong understanding of health & safety requirements within industrial environments.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a wider team.
Desirable
- Experience working within automotive or manufacturing facilities.
- Previous experience working within Nissan Motor Manufacturing UK or similar OEM manufacturing environments.
- CSCS Card.
- IPAF / MEWP certification.
- FLT or telehandler experience.
- Abrasive wheels training.
- Working at height or confined space experience.
- TIG welding experience.
- SSSTS or other site safety qualifications.

- Standard weekday rate: £15.51 per hour
- Weekend rate: £29.47 per hour
