Position Brief

We are seeking a highly skilled Mechanical Roll-to-Roll Process Engineer to lead the development, optimization, and scaling of continuous manufacturing processes for metal foil or electrode production used in next-generation battery systems. The ideal candidate will possess strong mechanical engineering fundamentals, hands-on experience with roll-to-roll systems, and deep understanding of web handling, tension control, and precision powder coating or lamination processes.

Mechanical R2R Engineer II to Senior / Manufacturing Department

· Position: Full Time: 40hrs per week / On-site M-F / Greensboro, NC

· Salary range: Negotiable based on experience.

Qualification

  • Minimum A.S. Degree or bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, chemical engineering etc.
  • > at least 3 years of R2R experience with ME-BS/BA Background
  • 3+ years of experience in roll-to-roll manufacturing, web processing, or electrode production (battery, capacitor, or film industries preferred).
  • Proven experience with metal foil handling, lamination, powder coating, or calendaring processes.
  • Strong understanding of tension control, edge guiding (EPC/CPC), and servo-driven systems.
  • Familiarity with equipment design, assembly, and troubleshooting for precision machinery.
  • Experience with CAD (SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and data analysis tools (Minitab, MATLAB, or Python) is a plus.

Preferred Skills

  • Knowledge of battery materials such as lithium metal, copper foil, or current collector films.
  • Experience in dry electrode processes or electrode manufacturing automation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a data-driven mindset.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment.
  • Ability to lead technical discussions with global partners and equipment suppliers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and optimize roll-to-roll process parameters for metal electrode fabrication, including lamination, powder coating, calendaring, and slitting.
  • Implement mechanical systems and process layouts to achieve uniform thickness, adhesion, and surface quality of metallic electrode layers.
  • Lead equipment installation, commissioning, and process validation for pilot and production-scale lines.
  • Collaborate with R&D and manufacturing teams to translate laboratory-scale results into scalable manufacturing processes.
  • Conduct root cause analysis and continuous improvement activities for mechanical, web tension, or alignment issues.
  • Work with suppliers and automation engineers to enhance process stability, precision control, and production efficiency.
  • Develop standard operating procedures (SOPs) and detailed process documentation.
  • Support FAT (Factory Acceptance Test) and SAT (Site Acceptance Test) for new roll-to-roll equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and participate in equipment risk assessments.
