Med Tech (medication assistant, technician)

Job Description – Medical Technician
Department: Assisted Living
Reports Directly to: Assisted Living Coordinator/Med Tech. Supervisor
Description of Position
The Med Tech provides direct personal care and supervision to residents and is responsible for assisting residents with centrally stored medications in accordance with physician orders, resident care plans, facility policies, and California Title 22 regulations. The Med Tech promotes resident safety, well-being, and satisfaction through proper medication assistance, monitoring, documentation, and support with activities of daily living. The Med Tech communicates effectively with supervisors, caregivers, and other staff to ensure resident needs are met.
Staffing Pattern
The Resident Care Services department staffs through a primary care structure. Each Med Tech is responsible for medication assistance and related care duties for their assigned residents, while functioning as part of the overall care team.
Qualifications for the Position
All Care Givers and Med Techs will have a current CPR and First Aid Card
The Med Tech shall be at least eighteen (18) years of age and have a criminal clearance prior to presence in the facility. The Med Tech will also have passed a physical and chest x-ray (or intradermal test) performed by a physician within the prior six months of employment. The physician’s report shall indicate whether the individual is physically qualified to perform the duties assigned and whether he/she has any health condition that would create a hazard to self, other staff members, or residents. Personnel with evidence of physical illness or emotional instability that poses a significant threat to the well-being of residents will be relieved of duties. In order to carry out the responsibilities of this position, the Med Tech is required to have training in caregiving and medication assistance, preferably in a geriatric or assisted living setting. The Med Tech must have completed all required facility and regulatory medication training prior to independently assisting residents with medications. 2 Physical ability to assist with mobility and resident transfers is essential. Good mental health is required. The Med Tech must be able to communicate effectively with residents, family members, physicians, pharmacists, and other health professionals. Additionally, the Med Tech must possess the ability to read, understand, and carry out resident care plans, physician orders, and medication administration records (MARs).
All Med Techs will have completed the “abuse reporting/legal duty” training video.
All Med Techs shall have a criminal record clearance prior to presence in the facility. Criminal record clearance must be completed through both the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
All Med Techs will have a TB test clearance within seven (7) days of employment and the required health screening completed within seven (7) days of employment.
Responsibilities
  • Assist residents with centrally stored medications in accordance with physician orders, resident care plans, facility protocols, and California licensing regulations
  • Accurately document medication assistance on Medication Administration Records (MARs)
• Observe residents for medication side effects, adverse reactions, or changes in condition and report concerns immediately to a supervisor • Assist residents with activities of daily living (ADLs), including bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, ambulation, and transfers as needed
  • Follow all safety guidelines, including proper lifting techniques and universal precautions
  • Follow assigned schedules of duties and individual resident care plans, including scheduled activities
  • Function as a team member and assist coworkers as needed
  • Monitor resident activity, food intake, functional status, and psychosocial status, taking appropriate action to promote well-being
  • Act immediately on resident crises, following facility protocol and First Aid/CPR training
  • Ask for assistance and report to the Med Room Coordinator or Assisted Living Director if assigned duties cannot be completed
  • Promote open communication between health care professionals, families, residents, and staff
  • Prepare meals for residents as assigned
  • Perform required laundry and housekeeping services for residents and the facility as assigned
  • Complete required in-service training and attend staff meetings
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Med Room Coordinator or Assisted Living Director.
Responsibilities and Job Duties of Overnight Med Techs
Note: This is an awake position.
  • Assist residents with nighttime activities of daily living, including assisting residents with centrally stored nighttime medications, in compliance with facility protocol and licensing regulations
  • Follow nighttime schedules of duties and individual resident care plans for nighttime needs
  • Provide continuous observation and supervision of residents during overnight hours
• Monitor resident activity, condition, and psychosocial status during the night and take action to promote safety and well-being • Report any status changes, incidents, or unusual observations immediately to the supervisor
• Act immediately on resident emergencies, following protocol and First Aid/CPR training • Assist with shift change communication to ensure continuity of care
  • Help prepare breakfast meals for residents
  • Maintain a safe, calm, and orderly environment throughout the overnight shift
• Promote open communication between healthcare professionals, families, residents, and staff • Perform any other duties assigned by the direct supervisor or Executive Director
MINIMIM QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
  • Must 18 years of age or older.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
Experience:
  • Experience working in a long term care environment as a med tech.
Mathematical Skills:
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
Reasoning Skills:
  • Demonstrates an awareness and concern for resident safety at all times. Ability to make independent decisions and works without supervision. Knows and understands facility fire plan, disaster plan and safety procedures.
Oral/Written Communication Skills:
  • Ability to follow written and oral directions. Ability to follow written and oral directions. Ability to interact tactfully with residents and family members staff and general public. Ability to read, write and speak English.
Equipment Used :
  • Standard office equipment (computer, fax, phone, etc.).
Physical Effort:
  • Must be mobile.
  • Other physical requirements as specified for department/function.
  • Overall good health is required to fulfill the demands of the position.
