Media Specialist

Job Description


This position assists in the communication of the City's public message, which is conveyed through utilizing various means of communication, primarily focused on social media channels, the City website, and digital media outlets. Final products may be subject to approval by a supervisor. This employee will be expected to use good judgment, creativity and skills to carry out their duties.

Works under the general direction of the Public Relations Manager. All employees are also under the general supervision of the City Manager.

Job Responsibilities

  • Helps to develop key communication messages
  • Collaborates with City departments to gather information and translate complex topics into clear, accessible messaging
  • Assists in creating, editing, and disseminating content for internal/external audiences through a variety of media, including but not limited to press releases, speeches, press events, newsletters, brochures, posters, flyers, articles
  • Capture and edit photography and videography for digital and print use
  • Creates, edits, and disseminates content for internal/external audiences through various social media channels including posts, reels, spotlights, and promotional materials
    • Monitor social media engagements and provides basic analytics reporting as needed
  • Assist in creating, editing, and disseminating campaigns to promote programs and facilities to ensure public has information for participation
    • May prepare feature articles for print media and program brochures
    • May prepare public service announcements and news releases
    • May develope program brochures and facility literatures
    • May coordinate magazine and newspaper advertisements
    • Serves as information liaison
  • May updates the content of the City website to ensure timely, accurate, and user-friendly content
  • Attend City events, meetings, and activities to capture content as assigned
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • An associate's degree from an accredited college or university in Graphic Arts, Public Relations, Communication, Marketing, Journalism, Publishing, or a closely related field.
  • Two (2) years' experience working in communication, public relations and/or creating commercial web content

Special Qualifications & Certifications:

  • Must possess a valid Utah driver's license

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


  • Enhances the City's image through sound community relations and reliable dissemination of public information
  • Correct use of English language and vocabulary
  • The City's Brand Guide and how to implement that in all official City communications
  • Best practices for communications and/or marketing related work which may include print, social media, web content, or multi-media
  • Proficient in both photography and videography
  • Organize, prioritize, and be detail oriented
  • Self-start and direct day-to-day workload while meeting deadlines
  • Interact with the public and with other City employees in all situations while maintaining a professional, pleasant, and courteous demeanor
  • Exercise sound and good judgment at all times
  • Be Creative
  • Communicate ideas and assist other's to see the vision of marketing strategies and potential future events
  • Utilize Windows operating systems, Microsoft Office (including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Utilize media and design software such as Canva, Adobe Premiere Pro, In Design, Lightroom and other Adobe Suite items
  • Utilize other computer software applications, including social media platforms, web development and editing software, photo and imaging editing software, and the ability to learn and maintain the City's website and other communication software used by the City
  • Utilize other standard office machines and equipment

  • Regularly walk, stand, or stoop and periodically climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl.
  • Lift, carry, push, pull, or move items weighing up to 100 pounds
  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet while in the office and moderately loud when in the field
  • This position requires the employee to be able to operate a car, pickup truck, van, or similarly situated motor vehicle

Compensation and Benefits

Salary Range:

The full wage range is as follows, please note hiring will normally occur at the minimum of the range and will not exceed the midpoint:

Minimum - $27.16/hr.

Midpoint - $32.59/hr.

Maximum - $38.03/hr.

Benefits:

There are no benefits with this position.
