Medical Assistant

SUMMARY: The Medical Assistant will work under the general supervision of the Director of Clinical Services and direct supervision of the RN Team Lead, a Physician (DO/MD), or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse. This position is responsible for patient safety, performing administrative and clinical duties as assigned, communication and documentation of accurate patient information/data and maintaining medical records according to regulatory standards and organizational policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Include the following (other duties may be assigned):

  • Room all patients that are scheduled with your assigned provider.
  • Obtain and record vital signs, height, weight, chief complaint, brief relevant history including pain status, allergies, current medication, primary pharmacy, and any other pertinent information. Prepare patient for examination/procedure, as appropriate.
  • Administer medications and immunizations orally, intramuscularly, subcutaneously, intradermally, and by inhalation as ordered by provider, asking for assistance from RN or provider if unfamiliar with medication or procedure.
  • Alert RN and/or provider of patient’s/family’s questions or issues related to medication administration.
  • Review medical records for the next annual appointment due date and inform the provider.
  • Provide support and comfort to patients and families during clinic visits and procedures as needed, including chaperoning during sensitive examinations.
  • Participate in patient education by providing standardized, structured written/verbal information to patients regarding procedures, preparation for diagnostic tests, and chronic disease conditions as instructed by RN/MD. Refer patients who require further teaching interventions to an RN or provider.
  • Provide emergency care to patients when necessary, using basic life support and automated defibrillator equipment, maintaining basic CPR certification.
  • Assist provider with procedures including those requiring aseptic and sterile technique.
  • Document complete and accurate patient observations, care, and outcomes of interventions in the electronic medical record.
  • Prepares patients for examinations including genital and pelvic examinations per protocol and assists with pelvic examinations and pap smear specimen collection.
  • Performs minor treatments as directed by the physician or nurse practitioner including hot and cold therapy (including but not limited to treatments using a: hot water bag, heating pad, hot soaks and compresses, ice bag, cold compress and packs), and ear lavage.
  • Performs simple office diagnostic tests including spirometry, resting and ambulatory pulse oximetry, 12-lead electrocardiograms (EKG), post-void volume (bladder ultrasound), and visual and auditory screening.
  • Sets up and assists the provider with minor office surgical procedures, including cryotherapy, laceration repair and suturing, electrocautery, skin biopsy, incision and drainage, and excision of skin lesion, moles, warts, cysts, and lipomas, as per protocol.
  • Coordinates with case managers for support services as needed.
  • Completes appropriate paperwork and forms including but not limited to medication prior authorizations requests, outgoing requests of protected health information, applications for disabled person parking permit, and out of work/school letters.
  • Protects patients' rights by maintaining confidentiality of personal and financial information.
  • Maintains a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by establishing and following standards and procedures and complying with legal regulations.
  • Serves and protects the practice by adhering to professional standards, facility policies and procedures; and federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Enhances practice reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests and exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
  • Completes other duties as assigned by Director of Clinical Services or Nurse Team Lead as needed.
  • Maintains CMA or RMA credential.

SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:

  • Knowledge of HIPPA Rules and Regulations.
  • Knowledge of computer programs (Microsoft Office 10, Windows 10, Practice Management/EMR Software).
  • Knowledge of lab and medical office procedures.
  • Ability to operate a computer and basic office equipment.
  • Ability to operate a multi-line telephone system.
  • Skill in answering a telephone in a pleasant and helpful manner.
  • Ability to read, understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, employees, and the public.
  • Must be well organized and detail oriented
  • Must be able to work in a faced paced environment and multitask.

EDUCATION: High School Diploma or equivalent and at least 3 years of Medical Assistant experience. Credentialing as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) by the American Association of Medical Assistants or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) by the American Medical Technologists

ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS:Normal medical office environment. Occasional overtime may be required and/or hours may be shortened as business needs dictate.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:Requires sitting and standing associated with a normal office environment. Some lifting required for file boxes. Manual dexterity is needed for using a calculator and computer keyboard. Ability to lift up to 15 lbs.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $18.00 - $19.50 per hour
