Medical Assistant job summary:
Under the direction of the provider, will assist in the health care of patients. Performs a wide variety of patient care activities including, but not limited to, maintaining clinical record/documentation, administering medications, giving injections, phlebotomy, EKG's, updating and verifying patient medication list, handling prior authorizations, handling telephone encounters/documentation, and taking vital signs; as well as any other task deemed necessary by the provider.
Medical Assistant job description:
- Welcomes patients by greeting them and taking them to a patient room. Rotate exam rooms, using the EMR and flag system to communicate patient status to provider.
- Verifies patient information by interviewing patient; reviewing and/or recording medical history; taking vital signs; confirming purpose of visit or treatment. Capture progress notes in the EMR system. We use eCW - eClinicalworks.
- Review and enter histories, and medication list. Reconcile medication lists and confirm pharmacy information with the patient.
- Prepares patients for the health care visit by providing examination gowns and drapes; helping them to position themselves for the examination and/or treatment; arranging examining room instruments, supplies, and equipment.
- Turn over exam rooms after patient is discharged, and disinfect as appropriate. Keep rooms stocked to provider’s specifications.
- As part of check-out process, assist with scheduling follow up appointments, and calling in prescriptions as needed
- Complete orders for mammograms, imaging, Home Health, etc, provide instructions to patients, and help to facilitate appointments
- The Medical Assistant also performs in-house phlebotomy draws, injections, and minor procedures, and submits orders for outside testing as requested by provider.
- Submit appropriate and accurate coding and documentation for lab visits or injections.
- Notify patients of their lab or imaging results and the recommendations of the provider. Add documentation to the chart or schedule follow up appointments if warranted
- Maintain medical supplies, samples by maintaining inventory. Place orders as needed.
- Ensure medical safety is maintained by disposing contaminated supplies; sterilizing medical instruments; administering medications on the premises; authorizing drug refills as directed; telephoning prescriptions to pharmacies; drawing blood; taking electrocardiograms; removing sutures; changing dressings.
- Completes records by recording patient examination, treatment, and test results.
- Generates revenues by recording billing information of services rendered; completing insurance forms; responding to insurance and other third-party inquiries.
- Follow up on open orders and unmatched lab results, ensuring that patients are completing their out of office care.

- Experience in eClinicalworks is a big plus.
