Summary

The Medical Assistant at Sunshine Community Health Center is a vital member of our medical team, playing a key role in providing equitable, timely, and evidence-based care. This position is responsible for offering direct clinical support to both the Medical and Behavioral Health teams and individuals seeking health services. Operating within the framework of a patient-centered home, the Medical Assistant adopts a team-based and trauma-sensitive approach to ensure the delivery of compassionate and effective healthcare services.

The Medical Assistant participates in organization-wide compliance and quality standards. Our Medical department is dedicated to fostering continuous partnerships with communities, the broader healthcare team, and local organizations. At Sunshine Community Health Center, healthcare is administered with a commitment to continuity and comprehensive efforts to enhance the overall well-being of the individuals we serve.

This position supports both Medical and Behavioral Health functions, with specific workflows defined in department-specific documentation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide direct clinical support to the Medical and Behavioral Health teams, including assisting with patient examinations, taking vital signs, and administering medications as directed.
  • Deliver care using a patient-centered model that respects individual needs and preferences.
  • Collaborate within a team-based healthcare model with Medical, Behavioral Health, and support staff.
  • Apply trauma-sensitive practices to create a safe and supportive care environment.
  • Engage with communities and healthcare partners to improve access and effectiveness of services.
  • Educate patients and families to promote informed healthcare decisions.
  • Maintain accurate patient records and support clinic operations.
  • Participate in the SCHC Quality Assurance program.
  • Maintain compliance with safety requirements.
  • Maintain HIPAA compliance.
  • Participate in improvement measures related to patient outcomes, clinical workflows, and work environment satisfaction.
  • Support Behavioral Health services by:
    • Preparing for psychiatric clinics.
    • Rooming patients for psychiatric visits.
    • Taking vital signs for psychiatric patients.
    • Drawing labs or obtaining EKGs as needed.
    • Assisting with faxing prescriptions.
    • Providing administrative support to psychiatric and Behavioral Health providers.
  • Perform additional duties within scope of practice based on credentials and assigned workflows.

Education and/or Experience

Graduation from high school or equivalent is required. Graduation from a medical assistant training program (or equivalent schooling), or on-the-job training, may be accepted at the discretion of the Chief Nursing Officer or LPN III. Medical certification or licensure is required for MA II and MA III. EMT II/III or paramedic experience may be accepted toward qualification. A minimum of two years of experience in the healthcare field and current CPR certification are preferred.

General

To ensure the health of our community, patients, and staff, SCHC requires proof of completed vaccine series or serologic test results for MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella), Varicella (Chicken Pox), Pertussis, and Hepatitis B, as well as TB screening, prior to employment.
