Medical Assistant

Position Summary

The Medical Assistant supports clinical operations at Total Urgent Care, an established multi-line independent practice serving urgent care, primary care, and occupational health. This role rooms patients, supports providers during visits, performs clinical procedures within MA scope, manages clinical workflows, and helps maintain the patient-experience standards that drive the practice's reputation and growth.

The Medical Assistant works directly alongside the existing MA, the two mid-level providers (NPs/PAs), and the owner-physician. The role is hands-on clinical work in a small-team environment where variety, autonomy within scope, and real patient relationships are part of the job.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Rooming and Visit Support

  • Greet patients warmly, escort them to exam rooms, and prepare them for the provider visit
  • Take vital signs (BP, HR, temp, weight, height, BMI, pulse ox)
  • Review chief complaint, medication list, allergies, and recent history
  • Flag AWV-eligible Medicare patients and CCM-eligible chronic disease patients for the provider during rooming
  • Document intake notes accurately in Tebra EHR
  • Assist providers during the visit as needed
  • Reset exam rooms between patients (table paper, surfaces, supplies, trash)

Clinical Procedures and Testing

  • Perform phlebotomy and venipuncture
  • Run point-of-care testing including urinalysis, strep, flu, glucose, A1C, pregnancy
  • Perform EKGs and prepare results for provider review
  • Administer vaccines and injections per provider order, including DOT-required vaccinations
  • Assist providers with minor procedures including laceration repair, lesion excision, joint injections, IUD insertions, and cerumen removal
  • Apply splints, dressings, and basic wound care under provider direction

Occupational Health Support

  • Perform DOT-qualified drug screen collections with proper chain of custody
  • Support DOT physical workflow including vision testing, urinalysis, and intake documentation
  • Coordinate workers' compensation visit documentation and employer reporting as needed
  • Support the Saturday DOT clinic operation

Clinical Compliance and Operations

  • Maintain vaccine refrigerator temperature logs daily
  • Maintain sterilization logs and ensure instrument processing meets standards
  • Manage sharps containers and biohazard disposal
  • Stock and inventory clinical supplies; flag stockouts to the Office Manager
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and audit-ready clinical area at all times
  • Support HIPAA, OSHA, and clinical compliance calendar tasks

Patient Communication and Workflow

  • Process refill requests under provider direction
  • Coordinate diagnostic test follow-up and patient communication
  • Support telehealth visits with intake and follow-up
  • Communicate patient needs and clinical issues to the provider team promptly

Team Citizenship

  • Work collaboratively with the second MA, the front desk team, and the providers
  • Maintain a warm, professional patient-facing presence at all times
  • Participate in weekly team meetings and quality discussions
  • Support new hire training as the team grows
  • Cover for the other MA during absences within scope

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum 1 year of clinical experience in urgent care, primary care, family medicine, or comparable setting (strong new graduates with clinical externships considered)
  • BLS certification current or willing to obtain within 30 days
  • Demonstrated competence with phlebotomy, vitals, EKG, and common point-of-care testing
  • EHR experience (Tebra preferred; training provided if needed)
  • Strong patient-facing communication skills
  • Reliable, organized, and able to manage multiple patients and tasks simultaneously
  • High standards for cleanliness, infection control, and clinical professionalism

Preferred Qualifications

  • Medical Assistant program completion
  • Active certification as CMA (AAMA), RMA (AMT), NCMA (NCCT), or CCMA (NHA)
  • DOT-qualified drug screen collector certification
  • Tebra EHR experience
  • Occupational health or workers' compensation experience
  • Spanish language proficiency
  • Experience in a small, independent practice environment

Required Within 30 Days of Hire

  • BLS certification (cost covered by practice if not current)
  • DOT-qualified drug screen collector certification (cost covered by practice)
  • HIPAA and OSHA training completion

Compensation and Benefits

  • $17 - $21 per hour commensurate with experience and certification

Practice Environment

Total Urgent Care is an established 3,000-patient independent practice serving Imlay City and the M-53 corridor. The practice serves Medicare patients, commercial insurance patients, occupational health patients, and the regional trucking community. The team includes the owner-physician (Dr. Jabir Akhtar, Internal Medicine), two mid-level providers (Nurse Practitioners), one existing MA serving as Office Anchor, and two front desk staff. The practice partners with Prexnova for chronic care management and care coordination, MedCare for billing and revenue cycle, and is currently expanding its primary care identity, occupational health program, and clinical capacity.
