Duties
- Review and interpret medical records, ensuring proper documentation for billing purposes using medical terminology and coding standards.
- Assign appropriate CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) codes, DRG (Diagnosis-Related Group) classifications, and ICD (International Classification of Diseases) codes such as ICD-9 and ICD-10 to accurately reflect services rendered.
- Submit claims electronically through EMR (Electronic Medical Records) or EHR (Electronic Health Records) systems, ensuring compliance with insurance requirements.
- Follow up on unpaid or denied claims by communicating with insurance companies and patients to resolve discrepancies or issues related to medical collections.
- Maintain detailed records of billing activities, payments received, and outstanding balances to facilitate efficient revenue management.
- Stay updated on coding guidelines, insurance policies, and regulatory changes affecting medical billing practices.
- Collaborate with medical office staff to ensure accurate data entry and proper documentation of medical records for billing purposes.
Experience
- Proven experience in medical billing or coding within a healthcare setting, with familiarity in medical office operations.
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology, ICD coding (ICD-9 and ICD-10), CPT coding, DRG classifications, and insurance claim processes.
- Experience working with EMR/EHR systems for data entry, claim submission, and record management.
- Ability to interpret complex medical records accurately and translate them into appropriate billing codes.
- Demonstrated success in managing medical collections and resolving claim denials efficiently.
- Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail to ensure compliance with industry standards.
