Responsibilities
- Review and analyze medical records to assign appropriate ICD-10 (International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision), CPT (Current Procedural Terminology), and DRG (Diagnosis-Related Group) codes for diagnoses and procedures
- Prepare and submit accurate insurance claims using Electronic Medical Record (EMR) or Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, ensuring compliance with payer requirements
- Follow up on unpaid or denied claims through effective medical collection strategies, resolving discrepancies promptly
- Maintain comprehensive and organized medical records, ensuring all documentation aligns with medical terminology standards and coding guidelines
- Collaborate with healthcare providers to clarify documentation and ensure precise coding for billing purposes
- Stay updated on changes in ICD coding standards (ICD-9 to ICD-10 transition), CPT coding updates, and evolving regulations affecting medical billing practices
- Assist in auditing medical records for accuracy and completeness to support compliant billing processes
Skills
- Strong knowledge of ICD-10, ICD-9, CPT coding, DRG classifications, and ICD coding standards
- Proficiency with EMR/EHR systems used in healthcare settings for documentation and billing processes
- Excellent understanding of medical terminology, medical records management, and healthcare documentation practices
- Experience with medical billing procedures, including claim submission and follow-up processes
- Ability to interpret complex medical information accurately for coding purposes
- Familiarity with medical collection techniques and insurance reimbursement protocols
- Exceptional attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment
