Medical Billing and Coding Specialist

Job Overview

We are seeking a detail-oriented, personable Medical Billing & Coding Specialist to join a small, independent specialty practice focused on urology, gynecology, pelvic health, and hormone therapy. This is a part-time position (18–24 hours/week), largely in-person with flexibility for some hours to be completed remotely. Because we are a close-knit team, this role blends billing and coding work with in-clinic support — including patient reception and care coordination. The ideal candidate is as comfortable at the front desk as they are in the billing queue, and takes genuine pride in accurate claims and a smooth patient experience.

This position is designed to grow. Our preference is for it to transition into a full-time role combining reception and billing — but we understand that may not be the right fit for everyone. For a candidate who prefers to remain part time, we are open to bringing on an additional team member to handle reception, allowing this role to evolve into a dedicated billing and coding position that could be partially or fully remote. We are looking for the right person more than a fixed outcome, and we're committed to having an honest conversation about what works on both sides. For candidates seeking more hours now, we are also actively recruiting for an experienced bookkeeper — and for the right person, those responsibilities could be combined.

Duties

  • Assign and review ICD-10 and CPT codes for urology, gynecology, and hormone management encounters
  • Prepare, submit, and track claims through ModMed EMR; manage charge entry and payment posting
  • Follow up on unpaid, denied, or underpaid claims; manage appeals and resubmissions
  • Verify insurance eligibility and benefits prior to patient visits; communicate patient financial responsibility clearly
  • Assist with prior authorization requests for medications, procedures, and labs
  • Perform front office duties on clinic days: patient check-in/check-out, scheduling, and phone triage
  • Maintain organized, accurate records in compliance with HIPAA and applicable billing regulations
  • Communicate with providers to clarify documentation and support coding accuracy
  • Stay current on coding updates and payer-specific requirements relevant to urology and gynecology

Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in medical billing and coding required; urology or gynecology specialty experience strongly preferred
  • Proficiency with ModMed EMR preferred; experience with comparable specialty EMR systems considered
  • Strong working knowledge of ICD-10, CPT coding, and insurance claim submission protocols
  • Comfortable in a patient-facing role — warm, professional, and able to multitask in a clinical environment
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently during remote billing hours and collaboratively during in-clinic shifts
  • CPC, CCS, or equivalent coding certification preferred
  • Bookkeeping experience a plus for candidates interested in an expanded role
