We seek a detail-oriented Medical Billing & Coding Specialist with specific experience in interventional cardiology procedures to join our revenue cycle team.
The Medical Billing & Coding Specialist is responsible for accurate, timely coding and submission of professional and facility claims for interventional cardiology services, follow-up on denials and appeals, patient billing inquiries, and maintaining compliance with payer and regulatory guidelines. This role requires deep knowledge of CPT/HCPCS, ICD-10, and documentation requirements for cath lab, EP, PCI, stenting, structural interventions, and associated device billing.
Key Responsibilities
- Accurately assign CPT/HCPCS and ICD-10 codes for interventional cardiology procedures (diagnostic cath, PCI, atherectomy, TAVR/structural, EP procedures, device placement, vascular access) and related outpatient/inpatient encounters.
- Prepare and submit professional and facility claims to Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial payers; ensure correct modifiers and place-of-service codes.
- Review clinical documentation and work with providers/clinical staff to obtain missing or clarifying information for correct coding and medical necessity.
- Monitor claim status, investigate denials and rejections, and process appeals and corrected claims to maximize reimbursement.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of interventional cardiology coding rules, payer policies, and regulatory requirements; implement coding and documentation best practices.
- Reconcile payments and post transactions; assist with patient statements and payment arrangements as needed.
- Generate and provide reporting on denial trends, accounts receivable aging, and revenue cycle metrics to leadership.
- Train clinical staff on documentation requirements specific to interventional cardiology when needed.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent; Associate degree or CPC/CCA/CPC-H/CPC-P/CIC certification preferred.
- Minimum 3 years medical coding/billing experience, with at least 2 years in interventional cardiology, cath lab, or cardiovascular procedural billing.
- Proficient with ICD-10-CM, CPT/HCPCS, E/M guidelines, and modifiers used in cardiology and procedural billing.
- Experience with major practice management/EHR systems (e.g., eCW, Epic, Cerner, Meditech, NextGen, Athena) and billing software; experience with cath lab-specific interfaces a plus.
- Strong knowledge of Medicare/Medicaid and commercial payer policies related to cardiology procedures and device billing.
- Excellent attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Strong communication skills for interacting with providers, payers, and patients.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA.
Preferred
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS).
- Experience working in a hospital outpatient lab or ASC setting.
- Familiarity with device/implant billing and manufacturer charge reconciliation.
