Medical Billing Representative

Overview: The purpose of this job is to provide support for the Business Office and maintaining the Accounts Receivable system.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Researches all information needed to complete billing process. Transcribes data from source documents and enters into computer files including billing/charge information.
  • Screens and reviews source documents at time of entry for proper completion and accuracy. Reviews output for accuracy of data input. Enter correcting entries.
  • Participates with other staff to follow up on accounts until no balance or turned over for collection. Followsup with insurance companies ensuring that coverage and benefits are approved and claims are processed and paid.
  • Assists with coding and error resolution. Posts all actions and maintains permanent record of patient accounts.
  • Answers the telephone and provides information as requested. Answers patient questions and inquiries.
  • Maintains strictest confidentiality. Communicates questions or concerns for prompt resolution.
  • Print daily report and balances all entries. Reviews the data input for completeness and accuracy.
  • Alerts supervisor of hardware or software problems.
  • Prioritizes work received and completes in a timely manner. Assists other office personnel as assigned and functions as relief for other personnel in the office.
  • Attends inservices and other meetings as required.
  • Translating to/from English and Spanish as it pertains to your job responsibilities.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities: No supervisory responsibilities.

Competencies:

  • Knowledge of billing practices, policies, and procedures.
  • Basic knowledge of coding and the ability to use the necessary coding books and materials.
  • Ability to examine documents for accuracy and completeness.
  • Knowledge of insurance company procedures and practices, particularly as they relate to levels and methods of reimbursements.
  • Work effectively with patients and coworkers. Must be able to communicate effectively with coworkers, Revenue Cycle managers, and the COO.
  • Must be able to work effectively as a team member within the business office.

Education, Experience, and Training:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • One year of billing experience in a healthcare organization.
