Position: Medical Collector

Position Summary
A Collector is responsible for follow-up on outstanding accounts receivable for the hospital. Critical requirement is in communicating well with members of the public and accurately recording data. In a medical setting, a patient insurance collector is required to understand fee schedules, CPT codes and how they relate to third party payer contract reimbursement.

Position’s Essential Responsibilities

  • Ensures billing is complete and accurate.
  • Performs insurance appeals when appropriate, and process correspondence daily.
  • Performs payment review and notifies Director of Revenue Cycle when payers are consistently underpaying or not paying timely.
  • Negotiate payments
  • Meet and exceed daily goals and monthly goals.
  • Initiate outbound calls that are effective in scope, and lead to successful payment or timely arrangement to satisfy the account delinquency.
  • The ability to balance both incoming customer service/collection inquiries from hospitals customers, while delivering an exceptional level of service.
  • Work with customers to find and arrange collection solutions for individual accounts.
  • Demonstrates ability to be team player.

Other Responsibilities

  • Completes required orientation as directed by facility
  • Follows facility and OSHA safety rules and procedures while on assignment
  • Respects cultural and religious practices of patients
  • Upholds HIPAA regulations
  • Punctual and dependent for assigned/confirmed shifts

Position Requirements

  • High School Diploma
  • 3 years Medical Collections experience
  • Customer Service, experience in a high call volume
  • Listens well and devotes full attention to patients and medical professionals alike
  • Has the ability to remain calm, even under the most stressful of situations
  • Communicates well, both orally and in writing
  • Is able to switch priorities based upon patient need
  • Possesses a basic understanding of medical terminology and procedures
  • Is able to maintain confidentiality
  • Has a professional appearance and demeanor in order to make others feel more at ease
  • Type at least 35wpm; MINIMUM REQUIREMENT
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Willing and able to work a flexible schedule, including evening shifts, overtime and weekends.

Working Conditions
Works in an office environment, where a great deal of time will be spent sitting in front of a computer screen. As a result, eyestrain and backaches are common. A great deal of stress is also associated with one of these positions, and workers will frequently come into contact with those who have communicable diseases as well. As a result, an employee must take extra care not to become ill themselves. Most people in this career field work full time, and hours can include weekends, holidays and overnight shifts.

  • Ability to lift twenty (20) pounds. Moving, lifting or transferring of patients may involve lifting of up to fifty (50) pounds.
