Medical Director and Medical Designee for Hospice

Job Overview
We are seeking a dynamic and dedicated Medical Director and Medical Designee for Hospice to lead clinical operations, ensure compliance with healthcare regulations, and uphold the highest standards of patient care. There are different opportunities and different roles which will be discussed in more dept upon hire. Your leadership will drive quality improvement initiatives, foster a compassionate care environment, and ensure adherence to all regulatory standards. Responsibilities

  • Provide medical oversight for hospice services, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations including HIPAA and NCQA standards.
  • Act as the Medical Designee to fulfill all legal and regulatory requirements related to hospice care documentation and medical decision-making.
  • Lead clinical development initiatives by integrating best practices, evidence-based protocols, and innovative approaches to enhance patient outcomes.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams—including nursing, social work, chaplaincy, and therapy—to coordinate comprehensive care plans tailored to each patient’s needs.
  • Oversee utilization management processes to optimize resource use while maintaining high-quality patient care; review medical records for accuracy and completeness.
  • Ensure all documentation complies with FDA regulations and healthcare management standards; maintain thorough records aligned with HIPAA privacy rules.

Requirements

  • Medical degree (MD or DO) from an accredited institution with active licensure in the relevant state or jurisdiction.
  • Proven experience in managed care environments, hospital settings, or clinical research with a focus on hospice or palliative care preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of physiology, anatomy, medical terminology, and clinical development principles essential for effective medical management.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with supervising experience in multidisciplinary teams; ability to motivate staff toward shared goals.
  • Familiarity with EMR (Electronic Medical Record) systems and EHR (Electronic Health Record) systems for documentation and data analysis purposes (HOSPICEMD).
  • Comprehensive understanding of HIPAA regulations, FDA guidelines, NCQA standards, and utilization management processes.
