SUMMARY OF POSITION
The Medical Laboratory Assistant performs routine laboratory testing and procedures to support the diagnosis and treatment of patients. This role works under the supervision of a Laboratory Supervisor or Medical Laboratory Scientist and ensures accurate, timely, and compliant test results in accordance with regulatory standards.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist in the preparation and processing of patient samples for laboratory testing
- Perform phlebotomy and specimen collection as applicable and certified
- Perform waived and moderate complexity testing in accordance with CLIA guidelines and competency level
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshooting laboratory equipment and instrumentation
- Ensure proper labeling, handling, and storage of all specimens in accordance with protocols
- Follow all laboratory safety standards, infection control guidelines, and regulatory requirements (OSHA, CLIA, HIPAA)
- Accurately document and enter laboratory data into Labdaq and/or Electronic Health Record (EHR)
- Prepare and maintain logs, reports, and documentation related to lab activities
- Perform and document quality control procedures to ensure accuracy of results
- Recognize abnormal or critical results and report to appropriate clinical staff per protocol
- Monitor inventory of lab supplies and notify appropriate personnel when restocking is needed
- Assist providers and clinical staff with lab-related needs and workflow coordination
- Ensure proper disposal of biohazard materials in accordance with safety guidelines
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support clinic operations
SKILLS
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Knowledge of laboratory procedures, specimen handling, and safety protocols
- Proficiency in electronic health records (EHR) and laboratory information systems (LIS)
- Strong understanding of medical terminology and laboratory procedures
- Ability to perform basic laboratory testing and quality control procedures
- Ability to stand and work in a fast-paced environment for up to 75% of the day
Requirements:
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements: High school diploma or equivalent
Preferred: 2 years of clinical laboratory experience
Experience in a physician clinic or outpatient setting
