Medical Laboratory Assistant

SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Medical Laboratory Assistant performs routine laboratory testing and procedures to support the diagnosis and treatment of patients. This role works under the supervision of a Laboratory Supervisor or Medical Laboratory Scientist and ensures accurate, timely, and compliant test results in accordance with regulatory standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in the preparation and processing of patient samples for laboratory testing
  • Perform phlebotomy and specimen collection as applicable and certified
  • Perform waived and moderate complexity testing in accordance with CLIA guidelines and competency level
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshooting laboratory equipment and instrumentation
  • Ensure proper labeling, handling, and storage of all specimens in accordance with protocols
  • Follow all laboratory safety standards, infection control guidelines, and regulatory requirements (OSHA, CLIA, HIPAA)
  • Accurately document and enter laboratory data into Labdaq and/or Electronic Health Record (EHR)
  • Prepare and maintain logs, reports, and documentation related to lab activities
  • Perform and document quality control procedures to ensure accuracy of results
  • Recognize abnormal or critical results and report to appropriate clinical staff per protocol
  • Monitor inventory of lab supplies and notify appropriate personnel when restocking is needed
  • Assist providers and clinical staff with lab-related needs and workflow coordination
  • Ensure proper disposal of biohazard materials in accordance with safety guidelines
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support clinic operations

SKILLS

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of laboratory procedures, specimen handling, and safety protocols
  • Proficiency in electronic health records (EHR) and laboratory information systems (LIS)
  • Strong understanding of medical terminology and laboratory procedures
  • Ability to perform basic laboratory testing and quality control procedures
  • Ability to stand and work in a fast-paced environment for up to 75% of the day
Requirements:

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements: High school diploma or equivalent

Preferred: 2 years of clinical laboratory experience

Experience in a physician clinic or outpatient setting
