Medical Scribe - Orthopedics

Job Summary

The Medical Scribe works alongside orthopedic physicians to accurately document patient encounters in real time, ensuring complete and efficient medical records. The scribe assists with clinical documentation, coordination of patient care, and administrative tasks, allowing providers to focus on delivering high-quality orthopedic care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Accompany orthopedic physicians during patient visits and accurately document patient histories, physical examinations, assessments, treatment plans, and procedures in the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Record orthopedic-specific findings, including musculoskeletal examinations, imaging interpretations, diagnoses, and treatment recommendations.
  • Prepare patient charts before appointments by reviewing previous records, imaging, laboratory results, and prior treatment plans.
  • Document office procedures such as joint injections, aspirations, fracture care, casting, splinting, and postoperative follow-up visits.
  • Assist with documentation for surgical consultations, preoperative evaluations, and postoperative appointments.
  • Enter orders for physician review, including imaging, laboratory studies, referrals, durable medical equipment (DME), and physical therapy.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and HIPAA-compliant medical records.
  • Coordinate with physicians, medical assistants, physical therapists, and administrative staff to support efficient patient care.
  • Assist with completion of medical forms, prior authorizations, disability paperwork, and workers' compensation documentation as directed.
  • Ensure documentation is complete before provider sign-off.
  • Perform other administrative duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Previous experience as a medical scribe or in a healthcare setting preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and orthopedic conditions preferred.
  • Familiarity with EMR systems (eClinicalWorks, Epic, Athenahealth, or similar).
  • Excellent typing and documentation skills (minimum 50–60 WPM preferred).
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask and work efficiently in a fast-paced clinical environment.
