Medical Scribe/Medical Assistant
Position Summary:
Performs administrative and clinical duties under the direction of a physician. Administrative duties may include scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, billing, and coding information for insurance purposes. Prior-auths or other paperwork. Clinical duties may include taking medical histories, preparing patients for examination, cleaning instruments, stocking rooms, answering phones, cleaning rooms and assisting providers with surgery.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Performs clerical and clinical work in a medical setting.
- Prepares treatment rooms for patient examinations; keeping the rooms neat and clean and prepares medical instruments or equipment for use.
- Interviews patients to obtain patient medical history, determines reasons patient is seeking care, and updates prescriptions.
- Records and updates information accurately in patient charts.
- Escorts patients to examination room and prepares them for the physician.
- Logs accurate data for specimen testing.
- Cleans and sterilizes instruments and disposes of contaminated supplies; disposes of biomedical waste in accordance with OSHA standards.
- Authorizes drug refills and provides prescription information to pharmacies as directed by a physician.
- Explains treatment procedures, medications or physicians' instructions to patients.
- Ensures dictated provider notes are entered accurately and completely into patient charts.
- Answers telephone, takes messages and forwards messages to the appropriate personnel.
- Keep supplies stocked and order as needed.
- Ensures patient and practice confidentiality adhering to HIPAA standards.
- Maintains a working knowledge of medical terminology and dermatology.
- Maintains a professional appearance and conduct at all times
Additional Responsibilities:
- Maintains work area, exam rooms, supplies, and sample closet.
- Relays basic triage as directed by a provider and per specific office protocol and procedures.
- Works patiently and effectively with all levels of employees; establishes and maintains effective working relationships with physicians, staff and management
- Documents work processes as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Required
- Ability to recognize and respond appropriately to urgent situations per medical office protocols.
- Working knowledge of International Classification of Diseases coding procedures (ICD-9 and ICD-10).
- Proficient with commonly used computer medical office programs as well as iPads.
- Ability to multi-task efficiently and effectively.
- Ability to maintain clear effective thinking and act calmly in stressful situations
Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.

- The ability to work at a fast pace and think independently.
Level of Education and Experience:
- Minimum of 1 year experience in a medical office environment preferred.
- Certified Medical Assistant is preferred, or possess an Interim Certification and pass the National Medical Assistant Certification exam within one year of issuance.
- CPR Certification for Health Care Providers.
