Medication Technician

Location: The Sentinel of Amsterdam


Position Summary

The Medication Technician (Med Tech) is responsible for administering medications to residents in accordance with New York State regulations and community policies. This role also supports resident engagement, monitors health status, and ensures a safe, compassionate environment.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Medication Administration

  • Administer medications to residents per physician orders and NYS guidelines.

  • Accurately document all medications administered in the Medication Administration Record (MAR).

  • Observe residents for medication side effects or adverse reactions and report concerns to nursing/Administration immediately.

  • Ensure proper storage, handling, and disposal of medications.

  • Communicate with pharmacies and providers as needed regarding medication refills and updates.

Resident Care & Monitoring

  • Monitor residents’ health, safety, and overall well-being.

  • Inform Administration of any changes in a resident’s physical, mental, or emotional condition.

  • Respond promptly to resident emergencies and provide first aid within scope of training.

  • Arrange transportation services for medical appointments or transfers as needed.

  • Document changes in functional status, personal needs, and appointments.

Resident Engagement & Support

  • Encourage socialization among residents.

  • Promote and remind residents to participate in activities.

  • Chaperone off-site activities when requested.

  • Provide one-on-one support/visitation to assigned residents as outlined in care plans.

Safety & Compliance

  • Assist in maintaining a safe environment for residents and staff.

  • Practice safe handling of equipment, chemicals, and supplies.

  • Identify and report supply needs to Administration.

  • Follow all community policies and New York State Assisted Living regulations.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Medication Technician certification (as required by NYS).

  • Prior assisted living or long-term care experience preferred.

  • Strong documentation and communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and respond effectively in urgent situations.
