The Med Tech is responsible to administer medications to residents as prescribed and to provide direct resident care when not administering medications or performing other med room related duties. Additionally, a Med Tech acts as the shift supervisor in the absence of a nurse on duty.
Qualifications and Requirements.
The Med Tech applicant must:
1. Provide a valid high school diploma and driver’s license;
2. Provide proof of completion of the Department of Human Services medication administration training within the past two years or successfully complete the training at Polk Personal Care Center or another designated location;
3. Have at least one year’s experience in the health care field, preferably with older adults;
4. Be at least 21 years of age;
5. Be in good physical health and able to lift and carry a minimum of 25 pounds; and
6. Pass a criminal background check.
Responsibilities.
1. Demonstrate good personal hygiene in dress and appearance;
2. Communicate effectively and act professionally in all interactions with residents, family members, and visitors;
3. Be respectful and courteous to residents and families and place priority on their individual needs and requests;
4. Partner with co-workers to provide highest standard of customer service to residents;
5. Be self-motivated and detail oriented in day to day responsibilities;
6. Report to work for shifts as scheduled and be flexible and willing to work different days and various shifts as needed to best meet resident needs;
7. Be familiar with and adhere to regulatory guidelines for medication administration in personal care homes;
8. Partner with med room staff to ensure its efficient operation and timeliness of medication administration;
9. Administer medications to residents as prescribed;
10. Assist residents who self-medicate to maintain independence with this task;
11. Maintain accurate resident records;
12. Protect the privacy and confidentiality of resident information at all times;
13. Collaborate with physicians, their office employees and other health care settings and systems involved in each resident’s plan of care to ensure best resident outcomes;
14. Assist residents with making appointments and transportation arrangements;
15. Maintain the lab log and complete lab slips to ensure resident bloodwork is drawn according to physician orders;
16. Complete wound care and treatments as ordered and report assessment findings appropriately;
17. Collaborate with the resident, physician(s), pharmacist and family members to review and reconcile the resident’s active medication list on admission and thereafter;
18. Assist in the coordination of resident admission, discharge and transfer processes;
19. Function as the shift supervisor in the absence of a nurse on duty to oversee the efficient operation of the Med Room and the facility in general;
20. Respond to and follow up appropriately to resident and/or family grievances;
21. Provide direct resident care/work as a caregiver to assist residents with personal hygiene/care needs when not administering medications or performing other med room related duties;
22. Respond timely to resident call bells and pendant alarms;
23. Read memos and reports to stay current with facility happenings, resident status changes and evolving med tech/caregiver responsibilities;
24. Assist residents with personal hygiene/care needs as requested and do so in a manner that best maintains their desired daily routines; this may include but is not limited to showering, “bowl” or bed bathing, shaving, nail & hair care, oral hygiene, dressing, incontinence care needs and any other assistance as requested;
25. Assist residents with other activities of daily living such as maintaining a neat and tidy living space, attending meals and activities, eating, making the bed, laundering soiled clothing, putting clean laundry back in drawers and closets, and changing linens;
26. Encourage and foster resident independence with day to day tasks as appropriate;
27. Use proper body mechanics and safe transfer techniques to avoid injuries to residents, coworkers, and self;
28. Pass fresh ice and water;
29. Assist residents to and from meals and activities;
30. Provide transportation to appointments as needed and requested;
31. Provide assistance in the dining room with serving food and any special resident mealtime needs;
32. Assist and encourage resident participation in exercise regimens;
33. Demonstrate proficiency with use of equipment;
34. Respond appropriately to resident emergencies;
35. Report appropriate information to the nurse or administrator;
36. Report maintenance and repair needs;
37. Complete required documentation as it pertains to caregiving and medication administration;
38. Attend mandatory in-services, trainings, and meetings;
39. Maintain required certifications;
40. Participate in fire drills and effectively execute the fire and disaster plan;
41. Identify opportunities for performance improvement and participate in performance activities as needed;
42. Adhere to facility policies and procedures.
