NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ+ Journalists seeks a Membership & Engagement Manager in Washington, DC. This is a hybrid position for someone located within the Washington D.C. area.

The Membership & Engagement Manager is responsible for leading membership recruitment and retention; member engagement; and chapter relations. Candidates must be comfortable connecting regularly with members via phone and electronic communication, and recruiting community stakeholders. The Membership & Engagement Manager reports directly to the Executive Director and works in tandem with fellow NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ+ Journalists staff to execute various programs and deliverables.

NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ+ Journalists is a nonpartisan, journalist-led association working within the news media to advance fair and accurate coverage of LGBTQ communities and issues. We promote diverse and inclusive workplaces by holding the news industry accountable and providing education, professional development and mentoring. The members of NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ+ Journalists are reporters, photojournalists, editors, producers, columnists, bloggers, communications professionals and students, as well as friends and allies. This position requires the ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing, excellent interpersonal skills, a strong attention to detail, excellent organizational and time management skills, and a professional image.

Position Responsibilities:

30% Member Recruitment, Retention and Management

  • Develop and execute membership outreach, growth, and retention messaging, campaigns and materials.
  • Maintain the membership database on a daily basis in order to ensure accurate, complete and up-to-date membership records and data integrity.
  • Regularly create reports and collect data surrounding member demographics and recruitment/retention goals for the Executive Director, Board of Directors and Chapter Leaders.
  • Partner with and support marketing staff to develop materials and messaging that communicates and amplifies the association’s mission-driven programming initiatives and member resources.
  • Forge and manage mission-driven collaborative initiatives, partnerships and agreements that support and enhance strategic membership goals with corporate ERG's and industry stakeholders.

30% Chapter Administration

  • Serve as the staff liaison to chapter leadership by answering questions, leading quarterly meetings, and performing administrative tasks to support and expand chapter work.
  • Assist with the administration of chapter finances and bank accounts.
  • Assist members in the process of starting new professional and student chapters and orienting new chapter officers.
  • Maintain records of chapter officers and their contact information.
  • Ensure chapters comply with NLGJA policies and procedures.
  • Oversee annual nomination and election process of chapter officers.

20% Program Management

  • Oversee the NLGJA Mentorship Program by matching mentee and mentor applicants, coordinating introductions and orienting participants to the program. Maintain support for mentorship matches throughout the year.
  • Oversee the scholarship application and selection process for the Leroy F. Aarons and Kay Longcope scholarship awards. Communicate with review committee, winners and applicants and coordinate the process of distributing scholarship funds to recipients.
  • Administer and maintain other select programs and member benefits including Job Board, Freelance Directory and Slack Community.
  • Assist NLGJA’s convention planning committee during annual convention planning. Manage the registration desk during convention and other major events.

20% Administrative and Member Support

  • Establish and maintain regular communication with, and respond to requests from, association members, partners, chapters and leadership.
  • Administer office responsibilities, including monitoring voicemail and general inbox.
  • Coordinate volunteers and volunteer efforts.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be able to work in the Washington, DC headquarters
  • 2+ years experience in nonprofit program management; membership management or customer service
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Comfortable calling lapsed and prospective members
  • Computer skills including MS Office and the entire Google Suite
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Resourceful, diligent, flexible, and responsive to others needs
  • Self-starter, with the ability to manage multiple collaborative projects, and meet deadlines
  • Enjoy creating relationships with members and key stakeholders via phone, in writing and in person
  • Willingness to travel; occasional mandatory travel for convention and board meetings

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years experience in member recruitment, sales, communication, or customer service
  • Bachelor's degree or comparable professional experience
  • Sound understanding of standard budget accounting procedures
  • Evidence of the ability to prioritize efficiently, coordinate with volunteers and develop creative solutions
  • Previous nonprofit or association-related experience preferred
  • Experience using association database; experience with YourMembership a bonus

Pay: $55,000.00 - $65,000.00 per year
