Skills and Training Required:
A bachelors or masters degree in a human services field: psychology, sociology, counseling education, or social work
Some of the tasks that a mental health counselor may tackle on a regular basis include:
- Providing behavioral management techniques to clients
- Talking about experiences, emotions, and thoughts
- Conducting sessions with children and adults
- Working to set goals, develop a treatment plan, and gain insight through treatment
- Working to identify situations, behaviors, and thoughts that interfere with their wellness and recovery
- Examining social issues that may influence mental well-being including peer pressure, bullying, substance use, prejudice, work stress, financial challenges, and health issues
- Referring to other health professionals, as well as other resources in the community such as other social services, job services, and support groups
